AI Search Rank Tracking Tools: GEO and SEO Platforms
SEO suites added AI rank tracking next to keywords. Dedicated GEO platforms track prompts. What rank means in an AI answer, how the two camps differ, and which one acts on the result.
Every SEO suite you already pay for now has an AI tab. Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Mangools all report some version of "where you rank in AI answers." Meanwhile a separate group of GEO platforms was built from scratch around prompts instead of keywords. Both camps call it rank tracking. They measure different things, and they hand you different next steps.
On this site we rank tools by what they do after the number shows up. So this comparison is less about which one has the nicer chart and more about which one helps you change the answer.
What "rank" means when there is no page two
A Google results page has ten blue links and a clear position for each. An AI answer doesn't. Three different things get called rank:
Position in a list. When ChatGPT answers "best payroll software for a 20-person company" with a numbered list, you can be third. That's the closest thing to a classic position, and it only exists for list-shaped answers.
Visibility share. Across a set of prompts and repeated runs, how often are you named at all? Answers vary from run to run, so a single check is noise and the share across many checks is the signal.
Movement over time. A prompt you held for six weeks and lost last Tuesday is a different problem from one you never had. Trend data tells you which.
Two more distinctions sit underneath. Being mentioned in the prose is not the same as being cited as a source, and the source an engine cites may not be yours even when it names you. A good tracker keeps those apart.
SEO suites that added AI tracking
These attach an AI number to the keyword data you already have. That's their strength and their ceiling.
Semrush AI Toolkit. Tracks mentions and links in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity with competitor comparisons and a combined SEO and GEO view. It's a $99 a month per-domain add-on, and extra domains, users and prompt packs each cost more. Tracked prompts are AI-generated approximations rather than real user queries, so treat the prompt list as a starting draft.
Ahrefs Brand Radar. Measures brand presence in AI Overviews and AI assistants against competitors, with the Ahrefs link and content index one click away. From $199 a month on top of an Ahrefs base plan. Prompts are modeled from Google keyword data, which suits directional research at scale better than tracking the exact questions your buyers type.
SE Ranking AI Tracker. The budget route: suite plus AI add-on from $89 a month, covering AI Overviews and chat answers. One check is one prompt on one engine, so five engines means five checks. Model that before you commit.
Mangools AI Search Watcher. The most rank-shaped of the four. It runs each prompt several times across eight engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Mistral, Llama) and reports average positions and visibility scores. It's included in Mangools plans, but the AI Search Watcher page doesn't publish plan prices.
If your team lives in one of these suites and wants a first read on AI visibility, the add-on is reasonable. What you get is a column of AI data next to your keywords. You don't get the pages the AI bots fetched, the visits the answers sent, or anything that drafts the fix.
Dedicated GEO platforms
These start from the prompt and build outward.
Promptwatch. Prompt tracking with search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs, so you pick prompts people actually ask and see the sub-queries an engine runs behind them. Prompt trends show how each prompt's visibility and rankings move over time, with detail on what changed between checks. Paid plans monitor the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral and Copilot, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The part the suites don't attach to the prompt comes next. Citation analytics shows which pages and domains win each prompt, including Reddit and YouTube. Agent Analytics logs AI crawler fetches and the crawl-to-citation path. Visitor analytics follows AI-referred sessions to conversions. Content Agents take a content gap, draft the page, hold it for review and publish to Webflow or Framer. A ranking drop becomes a draft, not just a red arrow.
Pricing: Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95 a month for 50 prompts. Professional is $245 for 150 prompts and adds crawler logs. Agency plans start at $199.
AthenaHQ. From $295 a month across eight engines, with a unified GEO score and an Action Center that turns visibility data into assignable tasks. Strong on the action side. Our catalog entry lists no CMS publishing and no crawler-log product.
Scrunch AI. From $250 a month billed annually. Tracks up to nine engines at the top tier and serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers. That's an action at the delivery layer rather than in your content.
Profound. Citation share and share of voice by prompt cluster, sold increasingly as marketing agents for AEO, content and PR. Starter is $99 a month yearly and ChatGPT-only. Enterprise starts around $40k a year. It suits large programs more than a team that wants a rank tracker it can run itself.
Where the split actually matters
The suites tie the AI number to a keyword. That's useful if your reporting is keyword-based and you want one dashboard. The GEO platforms tie it to the prompt, then to the pages behind the answer.
Picture a drop on "best expense tool for startups." A suite shows the drop next to your Google ranking for "expense tool." Promptwatch shows the drop, the competitor guide that replaced you as the cited source, whether ChatGPTBot fetched your page that week, and how many AI-referred visitors reached your page last month. Then a Content Agent can draft the replacement.
Who should keep which
Keep your SEO suite. Classic search still pays the bills, and the AI tab is a fair first look. If AI answers are becoming a real channel and you need to move positions rather than report them, add a GEO platform. Of the ones in our directory, Promptwatch is the one that connects the rank to the crawl, the visit and the published fix. Start on Essential with your top 50 prompts and see what the trends tell you after a month.
