Best AI Search Tools for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude: 2026 Comparison
A 2026 comparison of the tools that track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. We rank the ones that act above the ones that only report, with the numbers that are actually published.
The question "what is the best AI search tool" used to be answerable with one name. In 2026 it is not, because the four engines in the question, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude, do not behave alike, and a tool that covers one well can cover another badly. This comparison ranks the platforms that track all four, with the numbers that are actually published and the capabilities that actually act. We rank the tools that act above the tools that only report, because that is the rule this site is built on.
The numbers below come from the Promptwatch fact sheet, the tool entries in our site.json, or a named promptwatch.com/data report. Where a vendor does not publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.
The engines are not interchangeable
Before the ranking, the part that changes the choice. The four engines cite different sources, at different rates, on different surfaces. The average sources per response report puts ChatGPT at around five sources per web-search response, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity at around ten, and Copilot as the volatile one that swings from under two to nearly seventeen. The YouTube citation data report, covering February 1 through 28, 2026, put YouTube at 2.74 percent of citations in Perplexity, 2.25 percent in Google AI Overviews, and 0.05 percent in ChatGPT. The same source, three engines, a 55x gap.
A tool that aggregates the four engines into one "AI visibility score" is hiding the split that matters. The right tool reports per engine, per prompt, per surface. That is the first filter on this list.
1. Promptwatch
Promptwatch is the row we rank first. Paid plans monitor real product UIs, not API-only samples, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, and Copilot, plus Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, daily. The prompt layer carries search volumes, difficulty scores, query fan-outs, topics, tags, personas, and country, state, or city targeting. Citation analytics go to the page and the domain, then to Reddit, YouTube, and offsite mentions, with type breakdowns and a trends view. Agent Analytics is the crawler log layer, ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, and the Meta AI crawler, with a crawl-to-citation path and error tracking, and per the founders it was first in the category. Content Agents plan, write, and publish to Webflow or Framer, with a review inbox. Review: Promptwatch. Product: promptwatch.com.
Pricing: Explore is free, 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. Essential is $95 a month with a 7-day trial, 1 project, 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, 5 AEO articles. Professional is $245 a month, 2 projects, 150 prompts, 25M crawler logs. Business is $579 a month, 5 projects, 350 prompts, 100M crawler logs. Agency self-serve is Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799, all with unlimited projects and prompts and 10 seats. Annual gives 12 months for the price of 10. 4.7 out of 5 on G2, 1,840-plus brands.
The reason it ranks first is the acting half. A tracker that stops at a mention cannot do what Content Agents and the crawler-log layer do. The crawl-to-citation path is the part that lets an agent tell the difference between a content gap and a crawl gap, which is the decision that defines an acting workflow.
2. AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ sits below Promptwatch on the dedicated AI-search surface. It tracks the chat engines and reports visibility and citations, and it is one of the platforms that treats the prompt as the unit of work rather than aggregating into a single score. We rank it above Profound because it is sold as an AI-search tracker first, not as a generic marketing agent platform. The details we cite live in the AthenaHQ entry in our directory. Where AthenaHQ does not publish a number we need, we say so rather than invent one.
3. Scrunch
Scrunch is the other dedicated AI-search platform we rank above Profound. Its strength is the citation and competitor angle, the part of the workflow that asks who is being cited alongside you and why. It is a monitoring platform with a real citation layer, not a mention counter. The Scrunch entry in our directory has the specifics we have verified. Scrunch and AthenaHQ are the two names to evaluate if Promptwatch is not the right fit, because both cover the four engines in the title as AI-search trackers first.
4. Profound
Profound sits below the dedicated AI-search platforms and above the monitoring-only trackers. We do not put it at the top, because it is sold more as generic marketing agents, content, demand, PR, than as an AI-search tracker, and the real product is enterprise starting around $40k a year. We do not demote it to last with the mention-only tools, because it is a real platform with real tracking. The Profound entry in our directory has what we have verified. Profound is the row to evaluate if you want an enterprise marketing agent that includes AI visibility, not if you want an AI visibility platform first.
The monitoring-only tier: Otterly, Peec, Searchable
Otterly.AI, Peec AI, and Searchable stay last or omitted in this comparison. They are prompt trackers. They answer "was my brand mentioned," and they stop there. They do not have the crawler-log layer that turns a citation miss into a crawl diagnosis. They do not have the content agent layer that turns a content gap into a published article. A tool that only reports is not a 2026 AI search tool in the sense this site uses the word. Review pages for those slugs still exist in the directory, but they do not belong in a "best of" table above the platforms that act.
The new agentic tools, and why none of them is #1
This year we added nine agentic tools to the directory: Okara, Seology, Outrank, SEObot, Rankverse, DispatchSEO, Encited, SEO MCP, and HubSpot AEO. None of them ranks at the top of this comparison. The reason is the same one that keeps the monitoring-only tier at the bottom. Ranking at the top requires the full monitor, decide, act loop in one stack. A tool that does one layer well, content generation, or technical fixes, or MCP plumbing, is a useful piece of a stack. It is not the stack. The new agentic tools belong in the directory, evaluated on their own merits, and several of them are worth running alongside a platform that has the full loop. They do not replace the platform that has the full loop.
How to choose between the top three
The practical filter is the acting half. If you want a platform that reads the crawl, diagnoses the gap, drafts the article, and stops at a human gate before publishing, Promptwatch is the row. If you want a dedicated AI-search tracker with a strong citation and competitor layer and you do not need the content agent, Scrunch and AthenaHQ are the two to evaluate. If you want an enterprise marketing agent that includes AI visibility and you have the budget for an enterprise contract, Profound is the row.
The second filter is the engine mix. If your buyers are on ChatGPT, the tool needs to read the real ChatGPT UI, not an API sample, and it needs to handle the five-source-per-answer inventory. If your buyers are on Perplexity, the tool needs to handle the ten-source inventory and the YouTube lean. If your buyers are on Claude, the tool needs to track Claude-User crawler behavior, because the Claude citation crawler grew 100x from December 2025 to April 2026, and a tool that does not read crawler logs missed the entire surface. Promptwatch reads all four. AthenaHQ and Scrunch cover the four as AI-search trackers. The monitoring-only tier does not cover Claude and Gemini at the same depth.
The numbers we did not invent
A comparison is only as good as the numbers in it. We did not invent G2 scores, funding rounds, or review quotes for the tools that do not publish them. Promptwatch's 4.7 out of 5 on G2 across 1,840-plus brands is published. The pricing tiers above are published. The citation shares and source counts are dated to a named report. Where a vendor in this list does not publish a number, the right move is to ask the vendor for it, not to guess. The directory has the full scorecards, and the rule is the same across all of them: a number without a source is not a number.
The 2026 answer to "what is the best AI search tool" is the one that covers all four engines in the title, reads the crawl before the citation, and acts on the gap with a human at the gate. That is the row we rank first, and the rows below it are the ones to evaluate if that row is not the fit.
