Best LLM citation tracking tool in 2026: seven options compared
The best LLM citation tracking tool depends on whether you need counts or causes. We compare seven options on engines covered, citation depth, price and next steps.
"LLM citation tracking" covers two different jobs. One is counting: how often does a model cite your domain for a set of prompts? The other is diagnosing: which pages get cited, which do not, and what stops the second group. Plenty of tools do the first. Far fewer do the second. That split drives the ranking below.
How we judged
We scored each tool on five points, in this order of importance:
- Citation depth: page level, domain level, source types, position in the answer.
- Model coverage, and whether models are sampled through the real interface or an API.
- Evidence for causes, such as crawler logs and traffic.
- Price and how it scales.
- What you can do with the findings.
We did not rank on dashboard polish, which is easy to demo and hard to compare.
The ranking
1. Promptwatch
Promptwatch has the deepest citation reporting of the group, and it is the only one here that also gives you crawler logs and visitor analytics in the same workspace. Citation analytics run at page and domain level with URL positions. A Page Tracker follows specific URLs, yours or a competitor's. Offsite mentions find brand names on third-party pages without a link, and separate Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports show social sources. Citation Trends classifies each citation by content type and source type, then shows first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page.
On models, it monitors ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through the real interface, plus Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through the API. Agent Analytics adds IP-verified crawler logs with a citation rate per page. Pricing: Essential $95/mo, Professional $245/mo (crawler logs start here), Business $579/mo, and a free Explore plan limited to ChatGPT with 10 prompts.
2. AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ covers 11 models on Starter at $295 a month and reports citations inside a GEO score, then converts gaps into tasks. Credits are the unit: 3,600 on Starter, one per AI response. The Athena Citation Engine is reserved for the custom Enterprise tier. It is a good fit for execution-minded teams. It does not publish a crawler-log product.
3. Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month for 125 prompts and 5,000 responses on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. It includes AI agent and bot traffic reporting, which puts it ahead of most trackers on the "why" question. Gemini is not in the Core model list, so check coverage against your own buyers.
4. Profound
Profound reports citation share and answer-level analytics across up to nine engines on Enterprise. The public offer is a 7-day trial (50 prompts a day on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) and custom Enterprise pricing; the catalog carries an earlier estimate of about $40k a year. Best for teams buying a marketing agent program.
5. Ahrefs Brand Radar
Ahrefs Brand Radar is the AI visibility module inside Ahrefs. Custom Prompts is included with paid plans (daily quota of 5 on Lite, 10 on Standard, 20 on Advanced). The AI Visibility Index, a pre-collected database of more than 496 million prompts, starts at $199 a month. Good for directional research, less so for a precise panel of your own prompts.
6. Semrush AI Toolkit
Semrush AI Toolkit tracks mentions and links in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity next to your keyword data. The catalog lists $99 a month per domain with 25 prompts, but we could not re-verify the price recently.
7. LLM Pulse
LLM Pulse is a small bootstrapped tracker with five engines on every plan (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews), citations, share of voice and AI traffic analytics. Starter is €49 a month for 50 prompts at weekly tracking, with unlimited seats and an MCP server on every plan.

Who should pick which
Pick Promptwatch when you want to know why a page is or is not cited, and then fix it with content generated from the gaps. Pick AthenaHQ when a daily task queue matters most. Pick Scrunch for AI-specific page serving. Pick Profound for an enterprise agent contract. Pick Ahrefs or Semrush when your team already uses them and directional signals are enough. Pick LLM Pulse for a lean, low-cost weekly tracker.
One caveat about models
Models cite differently, and an answer from one is not proof about another. A tool that samples through an API may not see what a user sees in the chat interface. Ask each vendor which models are real-interface and which are API-based. In Promptwatch, for example, Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are API models, and that is stated plainly.
What none of them can do
No tool can force a citation. Answers change from run to run, so read trends over weeks rather than a single day.
If you want a quick test, run the same 30 prompts through the free Promptwatch Explore plan or a trial and compare the source lists with what you assumed.
