Can Semrush or SpyFu show ChatGPT ads, or do you need a specialized tool?

Semrush and SpyFu were built for classic search. Here is what we could and could not confirm about ChatGPT ad visibility, and which tools capture sponsored answers.

Quick answer

Probably not, and you should not assume it. We could not confirm that either tool shows sponsored placements inside ChatGPT answers. The Semrush AI Toolkit entry in our catalog describes tracking of brand mentions and links in AI answers across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It does not describe ad capture. For SpyFu we have no sourced product data at all, so we are not going to guess. Check its current feature pages for the words "ChatGPT" and "ads" before you pay for anything.

If your actual job is seeing which advertisers appear when a buyer asks ChatGPT a question, a specialized tool is the safer route. Promptwatch is the one we would evaluate first, because it ships a dedicated feature for it and sits on top of a full visibility platform.

What you are really asking for

"ChatGPT ads" covers two different jobs, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion.

The first is competitive: when someone asks a tracked question, which advertisers are shown, with what copy, and pointing at which landing page. That is ad monitoring, the AI-answer equivalent of watching a competitor's search ads.

The second is your own campaign. If you buy placements through OpenAI, the reporting for that lives in OpenAI's own ads tooling. No third-party tracker replaces it, and the tools below do not claim to.

Classic SEO suites like Semrush grew up measuring organic rankings, backlinks and paid search. An AI add-on bolted on later usually tracks whether your brand is named in answers. That is a different dataset from "who paid to be in this answer."

What Semrush can and cannot tell you

According to our catalog entry, the Semrush AI Toolkit costs $99 a month per domain as an add-on, with 25 tracked prompts and one user. Extra domains, users and prompt blocks add cost. We could not re-verify that pricing on 24 October 2026, so confirm it on the live page.

What the toolkit does well is put AI mention tracking next to keyword and ranking data you already pay for. If you live in Semrush, that is convenient. The entry also notes that tracked prompts are generated approximations rather than real user queries, which matters if you were hoping for ad coverage on exact buyer questions.

Nothing in the entry says it captures ad copy, advertiser domains or sponsored placements in ChatGPT. Treat that as unconfirmed, not as a definite no, and ask Semrush support a direct question: "Does the AI Toolkit show sponsored ads in ChatGPT Search answers?" Get the answer in writing.

Tools that do document ad tracking

These entries come from our catalog and the vendors' own pages as read on the dates in each entry.

PromptwatchAds Radar captures sponsored ads in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI ModeBusiness $579/mo, or any agency plan from $199/mo

Why Promptwatch is our first pick

Ads Radar records the title, description, image or price, advertiser name and domain, target URL, and the prompt that triggered each ad. You get views for ads per day, top advertisers, a table by ad and a table by prompt that shows ad count, your average visibility and the latest ad. You can filter by model, advertiser domain, prompt type and date range.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. It does not cover Perplexity. And it does not report on your own OpenAI campaigns.

Plan gating matters here too. Ads Radar starts on Business at $579 a month. It is also on every agency plan, which begin at Kick-off for $199 a month. It is not on Essential or Professional, so a budget brand plan will not get it.

The reason we rank it first is context. An ad that shows up on a prompt is only useful if you also know your own visibility on that prompt. Promptwatch puts the By Prompt view next to your average visibility, so you can see where a competitor is paying to sit in an answer you are not winning organically. Add citation analytics, AI crawler logs and visitor analytics with conversions, and you can decide whether the right response is to bid, to fix your content, or to do nothing.

Where the other options fit

LLM Pulse is the lowest-cost route on the list if ad tracking is a side requirement, though the entry flags weekly default tracking and that Claude, Copilot and several other engines are Enterprise add-ons. Gauge starts at $599 and its Growth plan covers three platforms: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot. GEO Monitor is French-language and run by a very small company according to its legal notice, so ask about support. Cognizo's entry lists ChatGPT Ads in its $499 plan but does not describe the feature in detail.

AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are strong visibility tools. Neither catalog entry documents ad capture, so we left them out of the table. They are still worth a look for the organic side, and you can read their pages at AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI.

Who should pick which

  • You already live in Semrush and only want a mention tracker: the AI Toolkit is fine, but get written confirmation before counting on ad data.
  • You need to see competitor ads inside ChatGPT answers: Promptwatch on Business or an agency plan.
  • You are on a tight budget and want a first look: LLM Pulse Scale or GEO Monitor, with the caveats above.
  • You run an agency: every Promptwatch agency plan includes Ads Radar, which is easier to justify than Business pricing across many clients.

What no tool can do

None of these products can guarantee that an ad appears, or does not appear, on a given day. Ad inventory is decided by the platform. A tracker shows you a sample taken from tracked prompts at the times it ran them. Read the numbers as a sample of what buyers see, not a full census.

The practical test is simple. Write down five buyer questions in your category, run them in ChatGPT yourself, and note whether an ad appears. Then check whether your chosen tool captured the same ads. If it did not, you have learned something before you signed a contract.
