Does a Google Business Profile influence whether AI assistants recommend a local business?

What a Google Business Profile does and does not do for AI assistant recommendations of local businesses, and which tools measure local AI visibility.

The honest answer has two halves. For Google's own surfaces, a Business Profile is part of the data behind local results, and Google documents how local ranking works. For other AI assistants such as ChatGPT, we are not aware of official documentation that says they read your profile directly. So the profile probably helps, sometimes indirectly, and you should measure it rather than assume it.

What Google documents

Google's help pages say local results are based primarily on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a profile matches what someone searches for, which is why a complete and accurate profile with the right categories, services and description matters. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher or the location in the query. Prominence is how well known the business is, and Google says it draws on information from across the web, including reviews and links.

Those factors describe classic local search. Google's AI features sit on top of the same ecosystem, so it is reasonable to expect a strong, accurate profile to help there. But reasonable is not proven, and the effect on a given AI answer varies.

What probably matters for other assistants

When a user asks an assistant "best plumber near me" or "which dentist in this neighborhood takes new patients", the assistant needs to find sources it trusts. Those are commonly review sites, directories, local news, community forums and the business's own website. A Business Profile can feed some of these indirectly, because reviews and listings on one platform often echo elsewhere.

Practical consequences:

  • Consistency of name, address and phone number across the profile, your site and directories reduces the chance an engine gets confused.
  • Reviews matter for prominence and as a source engines may cite.
  • Your own site should answer the questions people ask: services, areas served, hours, prices where you can share them, and how to book.
  • Crawl access matters. If AI bots are blocked from your site, they cannot read it.

None of this can guarantee a recommendation. Assistants vary, answers change, and local results depend on where the question is asked.

How to find out for your business

Write 20 prompts that mirror real local searches: category plus place, with and without "near me", plus a few specific service questions. Run them across engines, from the location that matters. Note whether you are named, which sources are cited, and who is named instead. Repeat weekly or daily. Then compare against the state of your profile and your citations elsewhere.

Tools that measure local AI visibility

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the platform we would start with because it measures the answers and the evidence behind them. Prompt tracking runs daily across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and more. For local work, state and city tracking starts on Business ($579 a month) and is on every agency plan, and the newer Local GEO/SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates, from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. That feature is on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. Other models fall back to country, state or city.

Citation analytics then show which domains the engines cite for those local prompts, including offsite mentions where your business is named on a third-party page without a link. Agent Analytics shows whether AI bots reach your site. Brands on lower plans get country-level tracking: Explore is free, Essential $95 and Professional $245.

2. Local Falcon

Local Falcon samples AI answers across a geo-grid from 3 by 3 up to 21 by 21 points and shows results as a map. It tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Grok, and starts at $24.99 a month with 7,500 credits. Credits run down quickly on large grids.

3. BrightLocal Local AI Visibility

BrightLocal Local AI Visibility is included in BrightLocal plans from $41 a month for one location. It scores each location from 0 to 100 on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, with up to 20 prompts per location and auto-detected local competitors. It works well for BrightLocal customers and is limited to three engines.

4. Uberall GEO Studio

Uberall GEO Studio has GEO Starter at $109 a month and GEO Scale at $449 a month. Location-level tracking starts on Scale. It suits multi-location brands that also want content publishing.

5. Yext Scout

Yext Scout benchmarks each location against up to 20 local competitors and is packaged into Yext platform deals with no public pricing.

Who should pick which

A single-location business that already uses BrightLocal gets a free AI score with its plan. A local SEO agency that thinks in geo-grids may like Local Falcon for its map view. A multi-location brand that wants per-store tracking and publishing can look at Uberall or Yext. If you want to see the answers, the cited sources and your crawler access in one place, and you are comfortable with the Business tier for local features, Promptwatch is the most complete option.

Whichever you choose, keep your Business Profile accurate, collect honest reviews, and publish a site that answers local questions clearly. Then measure whether AI assistants notice.
