ChatGPT Cites Mid-Authority Domains Most: How an Agent Should Aim Link Building
Promptwatch's August 2026 data puts DR 46 to 75 sites at 46% of ChatGPT citations. What that means for outreach targets and the agent loop behind them.
Sites with a domain rating between 46 and 75 earned 46% of ChatGPT's citations in August 2026. Sites rated 91 to 100 averaged 4.4%. That comes from Promptwatch's report on ChatGPT citation share by domain rank, and it cuts against the habit of chasing placements on the biggest domains only.
Coverage matters here. The report covers 89.65% of ChatGPT citations, the ones on domains with a known rank. The other 10.35% are excluded. The window is August 1 to 31, 2026, and the shares are monthly averages.
The shape of the data
By group: DR 61 to 75 held 23.4%, DR 46 to 60 held 22.6%, DR 76 to 90 held 18.9%, DR 0 to 15 held 6.3% and DR 91 to 100 held 4.4%. Domains rated 0 to 30 accounted for about 14%, and 0 to 45 for almost a third. DR 61 to 90 was about 42% all month.
The top tier moved during the month. DR 91 to 100 averaged 7% in week one, about 5% on August 8, and about 3% from August 14, the same day Reddit's share collapsed. The biggest gains went to DR 61 to 75 (up 1.6 points) and DR 46 to 60 (up 0.9).
Notice the coincidence with Reddit, which is a very high-authority domain. The report shows two things happening on the same day and does not prove one caused the other. Part of the "top tier loses share" story may simply be one big domain leaving, not a general verdict on authority.
What it does not mean
Domain rating is a third-party score, not something ChatGPT is known to use. The report is a distribution of where citations landed, not a ranking factor study. A DR 60 site was not cited because it was DR 60. It was cited because it had a relevant page. Never read this as "get a DR 60 link and be cited."
It is also one month, in one engine, in one vendor's prompt set. Your category may behave differently.
What the report suggests for outreach
The report's advice is to stop waiting for a top-tier DR, to put less weight on placements on the biggest sites, to aim PR and guest content at DR 61 to 90, and to benchmark against DR 46 to 75. As a planning heuristic, that is sensible and cheap to try.
Without any tool, here is how to apply it:
- Take the five prompts that matter most. Run them in ChatGPT and list every cited domain.
- Look up each domain's rating in whatever SEO tool you already own. Sort into the report's bands.
- Mark which cited domains accept contributions, reviews, or mentions of products like yours.
- Ignore the rating for a moment and ask whether the cited page is actually about your topic. A relevant page on a DR 55 site beats a loose mention on a DR 90 one.
- Build the outreach list from the relevant mid-band pages first.
The agent loop: monitor, schedule, fix
Link building is slow and repetitive, which is good agent territory so long as the sending stays human.
Monitor. The agent reads which domains and pages ChatGPT cites for your tracked prompts, and which competitors share those responses. It tags each domain with a rating band you supply.
Schedule. Run it monthly, since the report itself is a monthly average and the top-tier drop shows that mid-month shifts happen. Add a weekly look at new citations for the prompts you are actively working.
Fix. The agent proposes targets and drafts the pitch angle. A person edits, sends and owns the relationship. Do not let an agent mass-email publishers. It burns the domains you are trying to earn.
Where Promptwatch fits
Promptwatch supplies the evidence layer. Citation analytics work at page and domain level, so you can see which third-party pages are cited for your prompts, with URL positions. Page Tracker follows specific URLs, including a competitor's, and offsite mentions show your brand named on third-party pages without a link, which is a ready-made list of outreach where the work is mostly done. Competitor visibility and share of voice show who sits beside you in the same answers.
For the loop, Agent Chat runs multi-step analysis over live data, for example "list cited domains for these prompts grouped by rating band, and mark which ones mention a competitor but not us." Scheduled Chats repeat it. The Action Board turns the result into assigned tasks, with up to five evidence-backed actions suggested per weekly Discovery run.
One limit to be straight about: the feature list we work from does not mention a domain rating column in the product. Bring your own rating from an SEO tool and join it to the citation list. Paid brand plans start at Essential ($95/mo), and the plan matrix is where to check how far citation analytics goes on each tier.
Monitoring-only trackers can list cited domains. The loop here needs the follow-through, meaning the offsite mention list, a schedule and an action queue in one place.
What to do this month
Pick one prompt cluster. Build the cited-domain list, band it, choose five mid-band targets with relevant pages, and draft pitches for review. Re-run the citation check in four weeks. If nothing moved, that is useful information about your category, not a failure of the method.
