help.openai.com ChatGPT Ads FAQ: Sponsored Ads Controls (2026)

The ChatGPT ads controls documented on help.openai.com in 2026, step by step, and what each control means for brands that monitor or buy sponsored placements.

If you searched help.openai.com for the ChatGPT ads FAQ, the page you want is Ads in ChatGPT. Advertisers have a separate set of pages, starting with Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics and the advertiser FAQ. Below is a plain summary of the sponsored ads controls as those pages read on 2026-10-21, followed by what each control means if you are a brand. The brand half is the reason this site exists: tools that act on the data, ranked on our rankings page.

Who the controls apply to

Ads may appear on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts have no ads, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18. Ad controls appear only for Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or coming soon. If the controls are missing on mobile, the FAQ says to update the app.

The controls, step by step

Settings, then Ad Controls. This is the main panel. Depending on region and eligibility, you can:

  1. View History and Topics. See ads you viewed or interacted with, and the topics used to make ads more relevant.
  2. Delete ads data. Clears ad history and topics. It does not touch your chats. Full removal can take up to 30 days.
  3. Toggle Personalize ads. Off makes ads less tailored. It does not remove them. You still see ads based on the current chat.
  4. Toggle Past chats and memory. Off stops saved memories and older chats from informing ads. Ads then rely more on the current thread.

The three-dot menu on any ad. Four options:

  • Hide ad dismisses it.
  • Report ad hides it and sends it for review if it seems misleading, unsafe, or inappropriate.
  • About this ad explains why you are seeing it.
  • Ask ChatGPT shares that one ad into the chat. By default ChatGPT cannot see the ads shown to you.

Going ad-free. Two routes. Upgrade to Plus or Pro. Or, on the Free plan, switch to an Ads-Free experience from Ad Controls by choosing reduced message limits. Ads-Free means lower usage limits and no access to some tools, such as image generation or deep research. Go subscribers who want Ads-Free have to move back to Free first.

Places ads never show. Temporary Chats, and conversations on sensitive topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics.

Region note. Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.

What advertisers can and cannot see

The FAQ is firm on privacy. Advertisers never receive chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. They get aggregated performance data such as views and clicks. If a user chooses to message an advertiser through an ad, the advertiser sees only those messages.

What each control means for a brand

These are user settings, but they shape the ad environment your brand competes in. Read them as constraints on your strategy.

Personalization off still means ads. When a user turns personalization off, ads are matched to the current conversation. So the conversation itself, the prompt, is the targeting unit that always applies. That is the strongest argument for tracking ads by prompt, not by audience.

Memory can shift what a user sees. With past chats and memory on, two people asking the same question can see different ads. A monitor running a clean prompt shows you the baseline for the conversation context. It cannot reproduce every personalized variant, and you should not expect it to.

The EEA and Switzerland start without personalization. If you sell in Europe, ads there lean on conversation context even more. Prompt-level tracking matters more, not less.

Ads-Free and paid plans shrink the audience. Your buyers on Plus, Pro, or a Business workspace never see ads. For B2B categories where buyers mostly use company workspaces, the organic answer is the only surface that reaches them.

Report ad is a brand tool too. If a competitor's ad misrepresents your brand or uses your trademark, the ad policies prohibit impersonation and misleading comparisons. You need a record of the ad, with the prompt and landing page, to make that case.

Monitor, diagnose, act, verify

Monitor. You cannot see other people's ads from the help center or from Ads Manager. Observe real answers instead. Promptwatch Ads Radar captures sponsored ads inside ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode answers to your tracked prompts, storing advertiser, domain, copy, image or price, target URL, and the triggering prompt (Ads Radar docs). Run monitors in each country you sell in, since OpenAI campaigns target by country.

Diagnose. In the By Prompt view, compare each prompt's ad count with your own average visibility. Open a response to see the Ads and Citations tabs side by side. Is the rival ad sitting under an answer that already cites you, or one that ignores you?

Act. If you are missing from the citations, produce the page the answer needs. Promptwatch's Content Agent drafts against visibility gaps and publishes after review. If a competitor ad crosses a policy line, use the captured record when you report it. If you decide to advertise yourself, do it in OpenAI Ads Manager.

Verify. Check the same prompts the following week. Visibility up, rival ad count flat, AI-referred visits up in visitor analytics: that is a closed loop.

Ads Radar is on Business ($579/mo) and every agency plan (from $199/mo), per llms.txt on 2026-10-21. Essential and Professional do not include it.

The help center tells users how to control ads. It does not tell brands what ads are running. That second job is what the monitor is for.
