How do I find content gaps that are hurting my visibility in AI search
A step-by-step method to find content gaps behind weak AI search visibility, from prompt lists and citations to crawler logs, plus tools for each step.
A content gap in AI search is a question your buyers ask an AI assistant that your site does not answer well enough to be cited. It is different from a classic keyword gap. You can rank for a topic in Google and still be missing from ChatGPT's answer, because the engine pulled its sources from other pages, other domains or a Reddit thread you never looked at.
Finding those gaps is a measurement problem first and a writing problem second. Here is the method, then the tools that make each step less painful.
Step 1: define the prompts that matter
You cannot find gaps without a list of questions. Start with the prompts a buyer would plausibly type: category questions ("best X for Y"), comparisons ("A vs B"), problem questions ("how do I fix Z") and brand questions ("is A any good"). Pull candidates from Search Console queries, sales calls and People Also Ask. Tag them by topic and by type so you can slice results later.
Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer does the pulling for you: it suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. Prompt Volumes then add search volumes and difficulty scores so you can sort by demand. If you are new to estimating demand, see how volume is modeled before you lean on the numbers.
Step 2: measure who gets named and who gets cited
Run the prompts across the engines your buyers use and record two things per answer: which brands are mentioned, and which sources are cited. A gap shows up when competitors are named and you are not, or when you are named but a third party's page gets the citation.
Visibility metrics help here: Visibility Score, Share of Voice, position in the answer and sentiment. The citation view matters even more. Promptwatch's citation analytics show page-level and domain-level citations, URL positions, offsite mentions where your brand is named without a link, and separate Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports. If the engines keep citing a comparison page on a third-party site, the gap is not your blog. It is that no page on your side answers the comparison.
Step 3: look at the fan-outs
AI engines often break one prompt into several background searches. Those query fan-outs tell you which sub-questions the answer depends on. If the fan-outs ask about pricing, integrations and migration, and your page only describes features, you have found specific missing sections. Promptwatch lists fan-outs per model, which turns a vague "write more content" into a concrete outline.
Step 4: check that the engines can reach the content you already have
Some gaps are not missing content. They are content the bots never fetched. AI crawler logs show whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others actually request your pages, and whether they hit errors. A page that exists but returns errors to a crawler is a technical gap, and no amount of rewriting fixes it.
Promptwatch's Agent Analytics provides IP-verified, real-time crawler logs with a crawl-to-citation path and a citation rate per page. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month. Essential does not include them.
Step 5: score the gaps and rank them
Once you have prompts, citations and fan-outs, score each gap by demand, by how many competitors are cited, and by how close your existing content is. Promptwatch's content gap analysis gives coverage scores, and its Action Board turns findings into a prioritized to-do list, with a Discovery agent that reviews your data weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run. Monks, an agency, uses the Answer Gap Report and Visibility Score for client content roadmaps, per Promptwatch's own case study.
Step 6: fill the gaps, then verify
Write or refresh the pages, publish, and watch the same prompts again. Content Refresh in Promptwatch suggests diff-style updates to existing pages, and the Content Agent (Business and Enterprise) can plan, write and publish against gaps on a schedule. Visitor analytics then show whether AI-referred traffic and conversions move.
None of this guarantees a mention. AI answers vary between runs and between users. What you can do is raise the odds and measure honestly.

Who should pick which
If you want one place to find gaps, prove they are real with citation and crawler data, and then fix them, Promptwatch is the one to evaluate first. AthenaHQ suits teams that will work an action queue daily and accept credit-based billing. Scrunch AI is interesting if serving crawler-specific page versions appeals to you. Profound suits enterprise budgets. HubSpot AEO is a low-cost start if you already live in HubSpot and three engines are enough.
Do not skip Google's own guidance
For Google's AI features, read the official Search Central documentation rather than relying on third-party summaries. It is the source for how Google treats content in those experiences, and any tool you choose should complement it.
A quick checklist
- Prompt list built from real questions, tagged by topic and type
- Mentions and citations recorded per engine
- Fan-outs reviewed for missing sub-questions
- Crawler logs checked for access and errors
- Gaps ranked by demand and effort
- Same prompts re-run after publishing
Run that loop monthly and the gaps stop being a mystery. Start it in Promptwatch and each step has a named feature behind it.
