How do I get my content cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity?

A practical guide to getting content cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity: let the right bots in, write answer-first pages, earn outside sources, and measure what gets cited.

You get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity when three things line up: their crawlers can fetch your page, the page answers a specific question better than the alternatives, and outside sources back you up. Most advice online skips the first and third. This guide covers all of them, then shows which tools make the work measurable.

Step 1: let the right bots reach you

ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot to find pages and ChatGPT-User when a person's request triggers a live fetch. GPTBot is a separate crawler that OpenAI associates with model training. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. Anthropic's bots are ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot.

Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall rules. Blocking training bots while allowing search bots is a legitimate choice, but make it deliberately. Then verify in server logs that the bots can actually fetch your pages, since a rule that looks right on paper may still fail. Promptwatch Agent Analytics shows real-time, IP-verified crawler logs, so spoofed user agents are filtered out, with error tracking that explains failures.

Step 2: write pages that answer one question well

Both engines break a user's prompt into sub-queries and pull pages that match each part. The pages that get cited tend to do the same few things:

  • State the answer in the first lines, then support it.
  • Match the wording of real questions in headings.
  • Include specifics: names, numbers with sources, definitions, steps.
  • Stay current. A stale page loses to a fresh one on the same topic.

See what the engines actually search for. Promptwatch shows query fan-outs per model, and its free GEO Inspector Chrome extension shows ChatGPT fan-outs and fetched versus cited sources locally in your browser.

Step 3: build sources outside your site

Citations rarely come from your domain alone. Review sites, forums, YouTube and press often supply the source for the answer. Check which third-party domains get cited for your category and get properly represented there. Promptwatch has Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports and flags offsite mentions, which are third-party pages naming your brand without a link.

Step 4: measure what is working

Without measurement you will repeat what felt right. Track a fixed set of prompts, record which of your pages are cited, and watch which pages gain or lose citations over time. Citation Trends in Promptwatch shows for each page when it was first cited, how fast it ramped up, its peak rate and its decay half-life. That tells you when to refresh a page, not just whether it was cited once.

Step 5: fix gaps and refresh

When a prompt matters and you are not cited, find the gap: no page, a weak page, or a blocked page. Content gap analysis gives coverage scores, and Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates to existing pages. The Content Agent, available from the Business plan, can plan, write and publish against gaps with a review inbox.

Which one to pick

For citation work, the question is whether the tool shows why a page is or is not cited. Promptwatch is the one to evaluate first because it joins citations with crawler logs and traffic, then helps produce the fix. A tracker will tell you that ChatGPT cited a competitor. Promptwatch also shows whether OAI-SearchBot ever fetched your page.

AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are the other dedicated AI search platforms. AirOps and Goodie AI sit on the content side: use them if you already have monitoring and need production or page grading. Profound is built as enterprise marketing agents and suits large teams buying a custom program.

Realistic expectations

Citations are not a switch you can flip. Engines retrieve differently from run to run, and each has its own source preferences. No tool can promise that a particular page will be cited. What you can do is remove blockers, answer questions clearly, earn outside sources and track the result. A sensible first month: fix crawler access, pick five prompts that matter, improve the pages behind them, and compare citations after a few weeks.

Case studies from Promptwatch customers show the direction of travel, though they belong to those customers and not to every user. TreeHouse, which runs Pararius and Huurwoningen.nl, reported that AI search became about 25 percent of its organic conversions, with 99 percent of that from ChatGPT, after fixing crawler access and automating weekly reporting.
