How do I improve my brand's chances of being cited in Perplexity answers?

How to improve your brand's chances of being cited in Perplexity answers: crawler access, original research, third-party mentions, and tools to track citations.

Perplexity is a citation-first answer engine. Its answers show their sources, which makes it the easiest AI product to study and one of the more rewarding to optimize for. If your brand is not in those sources, you are not in the answer.

Nobody outside Perplexity knows exactly how it weighs sources, so treat everything below as practice you can test, not a formula. The good news is that testing is cheap, because the citations are visible.

1. Make sure Perplexity's bots can read you

Perplexity runs two named bots, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. If robots.txt, a firewall or a CDN rule blocks either, the rest of this list is wasted effort. Check your rules, then check logs, because a policy that looks open on paper can still return errors to bots.

Promptwatch logs both bots in Agent Analytics: real-time, IP-verified crawler logs, with error tracking and a crawl-to-citation path that gives a citation rate per page. You see whether Perplexity's bots fetch the pages you care about, and which of those get cited.

2. Publish something worth citing

The fanout behind this question mentions original research, and for good reason. A page that contains data, a method or a firsthand finding gives an answer engine something it cannot get elsewhere. A rewrite of five other articles gives it nothing new.

What counts as original research for most brands is modest:

  • A survey of your own customers or community, with the method stated.
  • An analysis of anonymized product or usage data you own.
  • A benchmark you ran yourself, with the setup described.
  • A first-party explainer with specifics only you can supply.

Do not invent numbers or cite studies you cannot link to. A made-up statistic is the quickest way to be quoted wrongly and corrected publicly.

3. Write so the answer can be lifted

Put the direct answer in the first lines under a heading phrased as the question. Define terms. Keep claims specific and dated, and update them when they change. Use a table when the question is a comparison. A quotable page is not a trick, it is clear writing.

4. Get mentioned by others

Perplexity cites more than brand sites. Third-party articles, forums, reviews and video can all appear in the source list. Being described accurately in those places gives you more routes into an answer.

Promptwatch reports offsite mentions (your brand named in third-party pages without a link), plus Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports and page and domain citation analytics. That tells you which outside domains actually get cited for your prompts, so outreach goes where it can matter. Page Tracker lets you follow specific URLs, yours or a competitor's.

5. Track Perplexity citations over time

Pick 30 to 50 prompts your buyers ask and run them daily. Watch citation rate, position and share of voice, and compare against competitors. Promptwatch monitors Perplexity through the real interface rather than an API approximation, and its Citation Trends view shows first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page.

Who should pick which

If you want to diagnose why Perplexity does or does not cite you, and act on it, Promptwatch is the better fit because it joins citations to crawler logs, traffic and content workflow. Note that Explore, the free tier, is ChatGPT only, so Perplexity tracking needs a paid plan. If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, their add-ons are a cheap first look. AthenaHQ suits teams that want an action list.

What to do this week

Start small. Check robots.txt and your bot rules for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. Pick ten prompts where a competitor is cited and you are not, then open the cited pages and write down what they offer that yours lack: a method, a table, a firsthand number. Draft one page that closes the biggest gap, publish it with a named author and a date, and re-run the same ten prompts in two or three weeks to see whether the citation list moved. That loop is the whole practice, repeated.

The caveat

No tool or tactic guarantees a citation. Perplexity answers vary between runs, so measure trends over weeks, not a single day. The aim is to improve the odds and learn quickly which changes helped.
