How do I know if my competitors are getting more visibility than me in AI-generated answers?

Compare your share of voice, citations and position against competitors in AI answers. A step-by-step method plus the tools that make the comparison reliable.

You know whether competitors are getting more visibility than you in AI-generated answers by running the same set of buyer prompts across several engines, recording who is named in each response, and calculating share of voice for every brand. If a competitor appears in a larger share of responses, ranks higher inside answers and gets cited from more sources, they have more AI visibility than you. Doing that once by hand is a start. Doing it weekly with a tool is what makes the comparison trustworthy.

Step 1: define the prompts and the competitor set

List 25 to 40 questions a buyer asks when choosing in your category: "best X for Y", "X vs Z", "alternatives to Z", "is X worth it". Then pick the competitors to compare against. Include your direct rivals and any brand that keeps appearing in answers even if you do not consider it a rival. Models often group brands differently from how your sales team does.

Step 2: run them across engines

Engines disagree. A competitor may dominate in ChatGPT and be invisible in Google AI Overviews. Track at least ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI features. Segment by country if you sell in more than one market.

Step 3: measure four things

  • Mention rate and share of voice. The share of tracked responses in which each brand appears.
  • Position in answer. Being named first is different from being named fourth.
  • Sentiment. How the answer describes each brand.
  • Citations. Which pages and domains the engine cites for each brand.

If a competitor is ahead on all four, the gap is real. If they lead on mentions but trail on sentiment, the picture is mixed.

Step 4: find out why

This is where most teams stop and most of the value starts. Look at which sources are cited when the competitor is named. Often it is a comparison article, a Reddit thread or a review page. Check whether your own pages are being fetched by AI crawlers and whether those fetches succeed. A competitor may simply be easier for the bots to read.

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is our first pick because it covers both the comparison and the explanation. Competitor visibility, Share of Voice and Position in Answer sit on dashboards with a competitor-comparison template. A heatmap compares any two dimensions, such as brands against models or topics, so you can see exactly where a competitor leads. Auto-discovered competitors catch brands you did not think to add. Then citation analytics shows what the engines cite for each brand, including Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, and offsite mentions. Agent Analytics shows whether AI crawlers reach your pages. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred visits and conversions, so you can tell whether a visibility gap costs you traffic.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ lists unlimited competitors on its Starter plan, which is helpful for crowded categories. The credit model charges per AI response, and our catalog notes no published crawler-log product.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI offers monitoring, sentiment and audits. Core covers four LLMs and 125 prompts.

4. Profound

Profound offers benchmarking at the Enterprise tier, sold alongside a wider set of marketing agents.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Toolkit

Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Toolkit are convenient if you already pay for those suites. Our catalog notes that their prompts are modeled or approximated rather than drawn from your own buyer questions, so treat them as directional.

Who should pick which

  • If you want to see the gap and learn what to do about it: Promptwatch.
  • If you operate in a crowded market with many rivals and can budget credits: AthenaHQ.
  • If you need an enterprise contract with services: Profound, or Promptwatch Business.
  • If you only need a directional read and already use Ahrefs or Semrush: the add-ons.

Reading the gap honestly

A single response proves nothing, so compare over weeks. Watch for brands that appear because they are famous, not because of anything you can fix. And remember that visibility data cannot guarantee that closing the gap will win recommendations; it tells you where to look.
