How many prompts should I track to get a reliable picture of your brand's AI visibility?

There is no magic prompt count. Start with 30 to 50 core prompts, grow by topic, persona and country, and judge reliability by stability. Plan limits compared.

There is no official number, so here is a working one

Nobody has published a rule that says "track exactly N prompts and your data is reliable", and we will not invent one. What exists is a practical way of reasoning: reliability comes from coverage and repetition, not from a headline prompt count. A hundred prompts that all ask the same question give you less than thirty that cover your real market.

Our working range is 30 to 50 core prompts for a first reliable picture of one brand in one market, growing toward 100 to 150 as you add topics, buyer personas and countries. Treat those as starting guidelines from editorial judgment, not a statistical law. Your category may need more or fewer.

What "reliable" actually means

Two different things get mixed together:

Coverage. Do the prompts represent how your buyers actually ask? A set built from internal keyword lists and no real buyer wording will be precise about the wrong questions.

Stability. If you ran the same set again tomorrow, would the picture move? Assistants can phrase answers differently from one asking to the next, so any single run has noise. Daily runs over weeks average that noise out.

A reliable picture needs both. You can test stability yourself: look at how much your visibility score swings day to day for a prompt group that nothing in the real world has changed. If the swings are large relative to the changes you care about, you need more prompts in that group, more runs, or both.

How to size the set

  1. List your topics. The distinct subjects buyers ask about: category, use cases, integrations, pricing, alternatives, problems your product solves.
  2. Allocate prompts per topic. A handful of prompts per important topic, so one odd response cannot dominate that topic's score.
  3. Add persona variants. The same topic asked as a CFO, a marketer or an engineer can pull different sources.
  4. Add countries and languages where you sell. Each is closer to a separate set than a repeat.
  5. Mix prompt types. Organic category questions, brand questions and competitor comparisons behave differently, so report them separately.
  6. Prune quarterly. Remove prompts that never surface anyone relevant. Add new ones from sales calls.

Quality beats count here. Ten prompts on a topic nobody asks about add cost and no insight.

Prompts are only half the budget

Most platforms limit more than one thing. Prompts are one quota; responses, credits or engines are others. Tracking 100 prompts across five engines daily creates far more responses than 100. Check what each plan actually counts.

Promptwatch comes first for this question because the plan structure matches how teams actually grow. Professional's 150 prompts is a sensible landing point for one brand across several topics, and agency plans remove the prompt cap and limit responses instead. Beyond counting, it helps you choose which prompts deserve a slot: Prompt Volumes show search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing; Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords and People Also Ask; topics, tags and prompt types keep reporting clean; and personas with persona stacking give you variants without copying a set by hand. Query fan-outs per model show what the assistant actually searched, which tells you whether your phrasing matches the real thing. Monitors run daily per model, country and language, which supplies the repetition that makes a small set reliable. Usage alerts at 85% of a quota stop surprise cutoffs.

AthenaHQ allows unlimited topics and prompts on Starter, but credits (3,600) are the real limit, since each AI response costs one. Heavy daily tracking can use the allowance quickly.

Scrunch AI gives 125 unique prompts on Core and our catalog notes that credits are consumed per engine, so wider engine coverage uses the allowance faster.

LLM Pulse offers clear tiers at 50, 150 and 450 prompts, with weekly tracking on the base prices.

Gauge offers the highest daily volume in this list at 600 prompts, though on three platforms and at $599 a month.

Otterly.AI has the cheapest entry, but its 15-prompt Lite plan is a testing allowance more than a working one, and extra prompts cost $99 a month per 100.

A growth path that works for most teams

  • Week 1: 30 to 50 core prompts, from real buyer wording.
  • Month 1: split by topic and prompt type, and read the results by group.
  • Month 2: add persona and country variants for your top markets.
  • Quarterly: prune dead prompts and add new ones.

Limits

More prompts do not guarantee a recommendation, and they do not remove variation between askings. They reduce the chance that you mistake noise for a trend.
