If I approve budget for an AI search visibility platform, what should it be able to prove to me?

Before you approve budget for an AI search visibility platform, here is what it should prove: measurement method, citations, crawler access, traffic and conversions.

A budget owner should ask a platform to prove six things, and a vendor's dashboard alone proves almost none of them. Most AI visibility tools can show you a chart that goes up. What matters is whether you can trace that chart to something real, and whether the platform helps you do something about it. Use the list below as the acceptance test before you sign.

1. That the measurement is sound

The platform should be able to explain what it measures, on which engines, how often and in what way. Ask which engines are read through the real product interface and which through an API, how often each prompt runs, and whether you control the prompt set and the definition of a mention.

Promptwatch is explicit here: ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI are monitored through the real interfaces, Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through APIs, with prompt panels run daily per model, country and language, brand aliases and a Brand Book that sets what counts as a mention. It also offers Excel and CSV exports, so your analyst can check the numbers.

Run a spot check yourself. Take five prompts, run them by hand, and compare. Differences show you the method.

2. Why you are, or are not, being named

A score without causes is a report, not evidence. The platform should show which pages and domains the engines cite on your prompts. In Promptwatch that is page- and domain-level citation analytics, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, an offsite mentions view and Citation Trends per page.

3. That the engines can read your site

This is the proof most platforms cannot give. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics logs real-time, IP-verified AI crawler visits from bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, with error tracking and a crawl-to-citation path. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month, not Essential. The listings for AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Profound and Am I Cited do not publish an equivalent crawler-log product.

4. That visibility turns into visits and conversions

Ask the platform to show AI-referred sessions and conversions on your own site. Promptwatch's visitor analytics does this through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin, and its 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page. Customers publish results: Crisp reported AI-referred traffic converting at twice the rate of traditional channels, and TreeHouse reported AI search at about 25% of organic conversions, 99% from ChatGPT. Those are customers' outcomes, not guarantees.

5. That insight becomes action

A platform that only reports puts the work back on your team. Look for a prioritized action list and a way to ship content. Promptwatch's Action Board gives a prioritized GEO to-do list, a weekly Discovery agent run suggests up to five evidence-backed actions, and the Content Agent on Business and Enterprise plans, writes and publishes with a review inbox.

6. That it is safe to buy

Check security and data handling. Promptwatch states ISO/IEC 27001 certification and GDPR compliance. We would not claim any more than that for any vendor without seeing the paperwork.

Profound's Enterprise plan was estimated near $40k a year in an earlier listing, and its trial runs seven days.

Who should pick which

Pick Promptwatch if you need the full chain from mention to cause to visit to action, which is what an approver can defend. Pick AthenaHQ if a credit-based action queue is the priority and you will budget for credit use. Pick Scrunch AI if crawler-side delivery matters. Pick Profound if you are buying at enterprise scale and want agents beyond search.

What the platform cannot prove

It cannot prove that engines will recommend you, since nobody controls that. It cannot prove causation from one change, because answers vary between runs. What it can prove is trend, cause and effect over weeks on a stable prompt set, and that your own traffic moved with it. Write that into the acceptance criteria and review it at 90 days.
