Tools to track citations and sources in AI answers: ranked for 2026

Ranked tools to track citations and sources in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, with pricing, what each one shows, and who should pick which.

When an AI answer names a brand, it usually leans on a handful of pages. Citation tracking is the practice of finding out which pages and domains those are, how often they show up, and whether they are yours. A mention count tells you that you were named. A citation report tells you why, and where to push next.

This guide ranks the tools that do that job. It also draws one line early: if you came here to verify the references inside a single AI-written essay or research summary, that is a different task. Those checkers confirm that a quoted paper exists. This page is about the other direction, watching which sources AI engines cite across thousands of buyer questions over time. We do not cover academic reference verification here.

What a citation tracker should show

Before the ranking, the checklist. A tool earns its place if it can answer these:

  • Which exact URLs get cited for your tracked prompts, and at what position in the answer?
  • Which domains dominate, including Reddit, YouTube and review sites you do not control?
  • Is a competitor's page cited where yours is missing?
  • Do citations stick over time, or does a page get cited for two weeks and then drop?
  • Does the AI crawler even fetch the page you want cited?

The last question is where most trackers stop. They report the citation but cannot show the crawl behind it.

The ranking

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the only tool on this list that covers the full chain from crawl to citation to visit. Its citation analytics work at page and domain level, with URL positions, a Page Tracker for specific URLs (yours or a competitor's), offsite mentions where your brand is named without a link, and dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports. Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type and shows first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page, so you see a citation's lifecycle rather than one snapshot.

The differentiator is Agent Analytics. Real-time, IP-verified crawler logs show GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others hitting your site, with a crawl-to-citation path and a citation rate per page. If a page is not cited, you can check whether it was ever fetched. Visitor analytics then attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo). Essential ($95/mo) has citation analytics but no crawler logs, and the free Explore plan covers ChatGPT only with 10 prompts.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ tracks citations as part of a GEO score and turns gaps into tasks through its Action Center. Starter is $295 a month with 3,600 credits, where one credit equals one AI response, and it covers 11 models. The Athena Citation Engine sits in the custom Enterprise tier. It is a strong execution tool, but the catalog entry lists no published crawler-log product, so you cannot see bot hits behind a citation.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI starts at $250 a month on Core with 125 prompts and 5,000 responses, tracking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. It reports AI agent and bot traffic and sells an Agent Experience Platform that serves AI-optimized pages to crawlers. Nine engines and API access need Enterprise.

4. Profound

Profound reports citation share and answer-level analytics. It is sold as enterprise marketing agents with AI search as one channel, and pricing is custom Enterprise after a 7-day trial (an earlier estimate in the catalog is about $40k a year). Buy it if you want an agent program, not just citation data.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar brings AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot into the Ahrefs index, and reports on Reddit and YouTube sources. Custom Prompts is included with paid Ahrefs plans with a small daily quota (5 on Lite, 10 on Standard, 20 on Advanced). The AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month. It suits research at index scale more than precise per-prompt tracking.

6. Semrush AI Toolkit

Semrush AI Toolkit adds mention and link tracking in AI answers to the Semrush suite. The catalog lists $99 a month per domain with 25 prompts, though we could not re-verify that price on the last check. It is convenient if your team lives in Semrush.

7. HubSpot AEO

HubSpot AEO costs $50 a month ($45 yearly) for 25 prompts a day across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, with citation analysis and prioritized recommendations. It leans toward shipping fixes rather than deep source analysis.

Who should pick which

Pick Promptwatch if the real question is "why was my page not cited, and what do I change?" The crawler logs and per-page citation rate answer that without guessing. It is also the one to start with if you want content generated against the gaps it finds.

Pick AthenaHQ if your team will work a daily action queue and can plan around credit billing. Pick Scrunch if serving AI-specific page versions to crawlers is the project. Pick Profound if you are buying a custom enterprise agent program. Pick Ahrefs or Semrush if one of them is already the team's home base and a directional signal is enough.

The honest limit

No tool controls what an AI engine cites. Citation data tells you where the evidence is and which gaps are cheap to close. It does not promise a recommendation. Answers also shift between runs, so judge trends over weeks, not a single check.

A simple first workflow

Start with 30 to 50 buyer prompts, not 500. Read the top cited domains, separate the ones you can influence (your own site, a profile you can edit, a forum thread you can join honestly) from the ones you cannot. Then check crawler logs for your own cited and uncited pages. Fix access first, content second. Re-read the report after a few weeks.

If you only try one tool from this list, try the free Explore plan or the 7-day trial on a paid Promptwatch plan and see whether the crawl-to-citation view changes what you would have done.
