Best practices for enhancing content visibility on AI models like ChatGPT and Perplexity: a one-week plan

A seven-day plan for improving content visibility on ChatGPT and Perplexity: crawler access, answer-first pages, citation sources, and measurement with Promptwatch.

You have a week. That is enough to fix the things that most often keep content out of ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, and enough to set up measurement so you know whether it worked. It is not enough to promise a result, because nobody controls what an engine cites. So this plan is about doing the right things in the right order and being able to show your progress.

What actually decides visibility

AI engines that search the web follow a loop: a crawler fetches pages, a model reads them, and an answer cites a few of them. Visibility fails at one of three points.

  1. Access. The crawler cannot fetch the page, or you have blocked it.
  2. Fit. The page does not clearly answer the question the model is trying to answer.
  3. Trust and presence. The engine prefers other sources, including forums, video, and review pages, for the topic.

Everything below maps to one of those three.

Day 1: check crawler access

Start with robots.txt and your CDN or firewall rules. OpenAI and Perplexity publish documentation for their crawlers. OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler tied to search results in ChatGPT and GPTBot as the one associated with model training, which means you can make separate decisions about them. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for its search index. Read those pages yourself before editing robots.txt, because they change.

Other agent names worth knowing: ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot, Perplexity-User, and Google-Agent. A blanket rule blocking all bots can cut you out of answers you wanted to be in.

The important step is checking what bots actually do on your site, not what your robots.txt says. With Promptwatch, Agent Analytics shows real, IP-verified AI crawler logs, so spoofed user agents do not pollute the picture. You see which bots visit, which pages they fetch, and which requests fail. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month. The free Agentic Readiness Check and the llms.txt and robots.txt generators are available if you want a quick no-cost look first.

Day 2: build your prompt list

Write down 20 to 30 questions your buyers ask, in their own words. Include comparison questions ("X vs Y"), problem questions ("how do I fix..."), and brand questions. Group them by topic. Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer can suggest prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, and People Also Ask, and query fan-outs show the sub-queries a model runs behind each prompt. Those sub-queries are the best brief you will get for what content an answer needs.

Day 3: run the baseline

Run the prompts across ChatGPT and Perplexity (and Gemini and Google AI Overviews if you have capacity) and record whether you are named, cited, or absent. Do this in a tool, not by hand, so you can repeat it. Promptwatch runs prompt panels daily per model and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment, and Position in Answer. Write down the starting numbers. You will need them on day seven.

Day 4: study who is cited instead of you

For each prompt where you lose, look at what the engine cited. The answer is often a Reddit thread, a YouTube video, a comparison article on a third-party site, or a competitor page. Citation analytics, including Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn reports and offsite mentions (your brand named without a link), tell you where the engines look. This changes the plan: if a forum dominates, a new blog post will not fix it.

Day 5: fix or write the pages

Pages that earn citations tend to share a few properties:

  • The answer comes first, in plain language, in the opening lines under a heading that matches the question.
  • Specifics are stated and sourced: prices, limits, dates, named features. Vague pages give a model nothing to quote.
  • The content is available in the HTML a crawler fetches, not hidden behind scripts that bots may not run.
  • Structure helps: clear headings, tables for comparisons, short sections.
  • Pages are current. Refresh outdated ones before writing new ones.

Promptwatch's content gap analysis shows which prompts you have no page for, Content Refresh proposes diff-style updates to existing pages, and Content Creation drafts from a brief. Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow, or Framer. Keep a human reviewer on every page.

Day 6: earn presence off your site

If third parties dominate the citations, plan a small number of placements: answer relevant threads honestly, contribute to the comparison articles that get cited, and make sure your own profile pages are accurate. This takes longer than a week to pay off, so start it now and measure it later.

Day 7: set up the loop

Connect visitor analytics so AI-referred traffic and conversions are recorded, via a lightweight script, the GTM template, or the WordPress plugin. Turn on the Action Board, which produces a prioritized GEO to-do list with weekly evidence-backed suggestions. Then schedule a weekly check against your day-three baseline.

Tools to consider for the measurement part

ToolStarting price (from catalog)Best for
PromptwatchFree Explore; Essential $95/mo; Professional $245/moMeasurement plus crawler logs, citations, and content in one platform
AthenaHQStarter $295/moTeams that will work an action queue daily
Scrunch AICore $250/moMonitoring with crawler traffic reporting
LLM PulseFrom €49/moSmall teams that want transparent pricing at a weekly cadence
HubSpot AEO$50/moA cheap first read on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini

Most of these tell you whether you were mentioned. Promptwatch is the one that also shows why, through crawler logs and citation paths, and what the traffic was worth, which is why it is our first pick for a time-boxed project.

What to tell your boss

Be honest about the limit: this work improves the odds and gives you evidence, but no one can guarantee an engine will cite you. Show the baseline, the fixes shipped, and the movement. That is a credible report after one week.
