What is generative engine optimization? A guide to GEO and the tools
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting named and cited in AI answers. Learn how it works, how it differs from SEO, and which tools help.
Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the practice of improving how often and how favorably AI answer engines mention, cite and recommend your brand or content. The engines in question are products like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Where classic SEO aims for a ranked link, GEO aims for a place inside the generated answer.
The term comes from academic work. A 2023 research paper introduced "generative engine optimization" and tested content changes on a benchmark of generative search queries; it was later presented at KDD 2024. We will not quote its percentages here, because they came from a research setup that is not the same as your market. Read the paper if you want the numbers. What matters for practitioners is the idea: the way content is written and sourced affects whether engines use it.
How generative engines build an answer
The details vary by engine, but the flow is similar.
- The user asks a question.
- The system may break it into several narrower searches, often called query fan-outs.
- It retrieves pages and sources for those searches.
- A language model reads the material and writes an answer, often with citations.
At each step there is a chance to be included or left out. Your pages must be reachable by the crawlers, relevant to a sub-question, clear enough to quote, and backed by other sources that describe you consistently.
GEO, SEO and AEO
These terms overlap, and people argue about the boundaries. Our working view:
- SEO focuses on rankings and clicks from search results pages.
- GEO focuses on being named and cited in generated answers.
- AEO, answer engine optimization, is used almost interchangeably with GEO, often with a lean toward featured answers and assistants.
Much of GEO builds on sound SEO: crawlable sites, clear pages, authority. The differences are in measurement and in the sources that matter. AI answers draw heavily on third-party mentions such as forums, video and review pages, and the same prompt can return different results on different days. You cannot track that with a rank tracker.
What GEO work looks like
- Prompt research: finding the questions buyers ask AI engines, and tracking them.
- Measurement: visibility, share of voice, position in the answer and sentiment, daily.
- Citation analysis: which pages and domains engines cite for your prompts, including competitors.
- Technical access: making sure AI crawlers can fetch your pages without errors.
- Content: answer-first pages that cover the sub-questions.
- Off-site presence: being described accurately where engines look.
- Attribution: tracing AI-referred visits and conversions.
What GEO cannot do
It cannot guarantee a recommendation. Engines make their own choices, and answers vary run to run. GEO raises your chances and gives you evidence about what is working. Be skeptical of anyone who promises a fixed result.
Tools for GEO, ranked
Our ranking weighs how much of the work each product covers. Prices are from our directory.
| Rank | Tool | Starting price | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Promptwatch | Free tier; paid from $95/mo | Tracking, citations, crawler logs, visitor analytics, content |
| 2 | AthenaHQ | Free tier; from $295/mo | GEO score, Action Center, content agent |
| 3 | Scrunch AI | From $250/mo | Monitoring, site audits, bot traffic reporting |
| 4 | Profound | Enterprise custom | Marketing agents plus answer tracking |
| 5 | HubSpot AEO | $50/mo | Entry-level tracking in three engines |
Why Promptwatch comes first
GEO has a measure, diagnose and act cycle, and Promptwatch maps a named feature to each step. Prompt tracking with search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs covers research. Daily prompt panels give Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. Citation analytics covers pages, domains, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and offsite mentions. Agent Analytics provides IP-verified AI crawler logs for bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ClaudeBot. Visitor analytics ties AI referrals to conversions. The Action Board and Content Agent turn findings into work.
Plans: free Explore (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential $95/mo, Professional $245/mo, Business $579/mo. Crawler logs start on Professional, and the Content Agent on Business.
The others in short
AthenaHQ's Starter plan is $295/mo with credit-based billing. Scrunch AI's Core is $250/mo for four LLMs. Profound's Enterprise tier is custom, with an earlier estimate of about $40k a year, and it is sold as generic marketing agents. HubSpot AEO is $50/mo for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. All can be a fit, but none of them lists the combined crawler-log, citation and traffic layers.
How to start GEO this month
- Write 25 to 50 prompts from real customer questions.
- Track them daily across three or more engines.
- Check AI crawler logs for access errors on your key pages.
- Read the citations on prompts where competitors win.
- Fix or create the pages that answer those sub-questions.
- Re-measure after two weeks.
That loop is GEO. Everything else is detail.
