What should I look for in a tool that tells me which content to create so AI models start citing my site?

What to look for in a tool that tells you which content to create so AI models start citing your site: criteria, ranked tools, pricing and the traps to avoid.

A tool that tells you what to write is only useful if its advice comes from evidence about how AI models choose sources. Plenty of products produce a list of "content ideas" that could have come from any keyword tool. The ones worth buying connect a recommendation to a prompt you are losing, a source that wins it and a way to check afterwards that it worked.

Seven things to look for

1. Recommendations tied to prompts. Each suggestion should name the question it addresses, so you can verify the gap by running the prompt.

2. Competitor and source analysis. The tool should show which pages the engines cite instead of yours, and what those pages do well. That is the brief.

3. A view of third-party sources. Not every gap is fixable on your own site. If Reddit threads or listicles win the prompt, the tool should say so.

4. Crawler access data. There is no point briefing content the bots cannot reach. Look for crawler logs.

5. A way to produce and ship the content. Drafting inside the tool saves handoffs, but publishing should be gated by your approval.

6. Refresh as well as new content. Some gaps are fixed by updating an existing page.

7. Proof afterwards. The tool should show whether a published page started to be cited, and whether it brought visits.

How the leading tools measure up

Promptwatch

Promptwatch fits most of this list in one workspace. Content gap analysis scores coverage against your prompts, and the Answer Gap view feeds content roadmaps. Prompt tracking includes search volumes, difficulty scores and query fan-outs per model, which shows the sub-questions an engine asks before answering. Citation analytics identify winning pages and domains, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and an offsite mentions view for third-party gaps.

For production, the Content Agent (Business and Enterprise) plans, writes and publishes against visibility gaps on a schedule, with a review inbox or a hands-off mode with a quality check. Content Creation from a brief, Content Refresh with diff-style updates, a Knowledge Base on Professional and up and author profiles round it out. It publishes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer.

For proof, Citation Trends report first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page, Agent Analytics shows crawler access with a citation rate per page, and visitor analytics tracks AI-referred conversions.

Pricing: Explore is free with 10 prompts and ChatGPT only, Essential $95 a month, Professional $245, Business $579. The Content Agent starts on Business, and agency plans do not include AEO articles or the Content Agent.

AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ turns gaps into on-page and off-page actions through an Action Center and a content optimization agent, with Shopify and Webflow integrations listed. Starter is $295 a month with 3,600 credits, where one credit is one AI response. Recommendations still need editing before they ship, and there is no Reddit monitoring or crawler analytics listed.

Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month and includes insights and recommendations alongside site audits. Reviewers say the advice shows where you are not cited more than what to change, which is the exact weakness this buying question is trying to avoid.

Profound

Profound sells agents for research, content and reporting at enterprise scale, with custom pricing. It is a marketing agent suite more than a dedicated AI-search recommendation tool.

Mentionable

Mentionable tracks hidden fan-out queries, reads the pages engines cite and drafts yours in the same format, from 79 euros a month. Drafts are pasted onto your site by hand, with no CMS publishing or review inbox, and no crawler logs.

Agentic content tools

Tools like Outrank ($99 a month for 30 articles) and SEObot (from $49 a month) write and publish at volume. They sit below the platforms above because they do not publish prompt tracking, citation analytics or crawler logs, so they cannot tell you which content to create for AI models. They produce content, and the choosing is up to you.

Who should pick which

If you want one place that picks the content, produces it, gates it and proves it, Promptwatch is where we would start. If you want a credit-based action queue, AthenaHQ. If you only need drafts of missing pages at a low entry price, Mentionable.

The limit

No tool can guarantee a citation. Treat any recommendation as a hypothesis, publish it, and check it against a steady prompt panel over several weeks.
