Which tools show the questions AI models answer in my category that my site doesn't cover?

Tools that show the questions AI models answer in your category that your site doesn't cover: how content gap analysis works, what to look for and who offers it.

You want a list of the questions AI models are answering in your category where your site has nothing to say. That list is a content gap analysis for AI search, and several tools now offer one. They differ a lot in where the questions come from, so it is worth understanding the options before you compare features.

Where the questions come from

A tool can build its list of questions from different sources, and each has weaknesses:

  • Modeled from keyword data. The tool estimates conversational prompts from search keywords. Broad, but a modeled prompt is not an observed one.
  • Your own tracked prompts. You define prompts, the tool runs them and shows where you are absent. Accurate for what you entered, blind to what you did not think of.
  • Suggestions from your own data. Search Console queries, ranking keywords and People Also Ask, turned into candidate prompts.
  • Fan-outs. The sub-searches the engine runs for a prompt, which show the specific questions it asks about your topic.
  • Competitor and citation analysis. Pages that are cited for a prompt and the questions they answer.

The best tools combine at least two.

What a gap analysis should return

Look for these outputs:

  1. A list of prompts where competitors are named or cited and you are not.
  2. A coverage score showing how well your existing pages answer each topic.
  3. Evidence: the actual answers and cited sources.
  4. A way to turn gaps into tasks or drafts.

If a tool returns only a score, you will still need to work out what to write.

Why Promptwatch is first for this job

This is the use case the product handles end to end.

Finding the questions. Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page. Prompt Volumes adds search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing, so the list is ranked by value. Query fan-outs per model show the sub-questions each engine asks.

Measuring the gap. Content gap analysis gives coverage scores, and a topic-level view shows where pages underdeliver for their topic in Topic Insights (part of 360 Insights). Competitor heatmaps and the Answer Gap Report approach show where rivals are answering and you are not. Monks, an agency named in Promptwatch's own case studies, uses the Answer Gap Report and Visibility Score for client content roadmaps. That is their account, and not a result to generalize.

Closing it. The Action Board prioritizes work. Content creation from a brief drafts the page, Content Refresh gives diff-style updates for existing pages, and publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer. On Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against gaps on a schedule, with a review inbox or hands-off mode.

Checking it worked. Citation analytics, page-level citation rate and visitor analytics show whether the new page was fetched, cited and visited. Agent Analytics logs start on Professional ($245/mo).

Plan notes: Essential ($95/mo) includes content gap analysis and 360 Insights. Professional ($245/mo) adds the knowledge base and five AEO articles. A free Explore plan covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT.

How the others differ

AthenaHQ is credit-based: one credit per AI response, 3,600 on Starter. Its Action Center is a genuine strength. Ahrefs Brand Radar is attractive if you already use Ahrefs, but its prompts are modeled from Google keyword data, not collected from real conversational queries, and our catalog records an independent test that found large undercounts in ChatGPT mentions. Mentionable is a smaller French-built tool whose pitch is close to this exact job.

Who should pick which

  • You want gaps, drafts and measurement in one place: Promptwatch.
  • You want a guided action queue and have budget: AthenaHQ.
  • You already use Ahrefs and want rough prompt volume: Brand Radar.
  • You want a lighter, European-built option: Mentionable.

Limits

A gap list is a hypothesis. Writing a page for each gap does not guarantee citations, and some gaps are not worth filling. Rank them by buyer value, and test a handful before scaling.
