AI Search Vitals vs AI Citation Monitor (2026): raw evidence or error bars
AI Search Vitals keeps the raw answer for every check from $19/mo; AI Citation Monitor puts a confidence interval on every score from $49/mo. One audits, one prescribes. Neither publishes.
The one-sentence difference: AI Search Vitals shows you the evidence behind every check and bundles basic GEO audits, while AI Citation Monitor gives you a score with a confidence interval and a prioritized list of fixes. Both are built by people who distrust black-box scores, which we like. On the agentic scale, one diagnoses and the other recommends. You execute in both cases.

How AI Search Vitals works
AI Search Vitals runs saved buyer prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek and keeps the receipt for each successful check: the raw answer, the actual model, market, language, web-search mode, run time, token usage and any cited URLs. Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice against up to 20 competitors per project sit on top, with a citation explorer for domains and pages.
Its documentation is unusually exact about counting. One prompt on one engine is one check, counted on submission even if the provider call fails. Lite is $19/mo for 20 prompts and 1,200 checks. Standard is $79/mo for 50 prompts and 6,000 checks. Premium is $199/mo for 100 prompts and 12,000 checks. A capacity pack adds 600 checks for $12/mo.
Do the arithmetic on Lite before you buy. Twenty prompts, daily, on four engines is about 2,400 checks a month. The plan gives 1,200. You'll run weekly or drop engines.
The audit tools are its closest thing to action: a crawlability checker for robots.txt, AI crawler policy and headers, a content checker for headings, metadata and JSON-LD, and AI Query Expansion. They tell you what to change. They don't change it.
Perplexity, Grok and Google AI Overviews aren't among the listed channels, and the site says plainly that API runs may not match what a person sees in the consumer apps.
How AI Citation Monitor works
AI Citation Monitor runs each prompt several times to deal with non-determinism, then reports a 0 to 100 visibility score with a confidence interval. It refuses to show a score when the sample is too small. That's the right kind of restraint.
Starter is $49/mo for one brand, all five engines, 25 prompts, weekly monitoring and competitor share of voice. Growth is $129/mo for three brands, 50 prompts, history, alerts, prescriptive fixes and logo white-label. Agency is $349/mo for 10 client workspaces, 200 prompts, branded PDF reports and API. Annual billing saves 40 percent.
The prescriptive fixes are what move it one notch up our scale: the page to write and the source to earn, prioritized. They're instructions. Someone on your team still writes the page.
Coverage is five engines, weekly. No Claude, Grok or DeepSeek.
Who should pick which
Pick AI Search Vitals if you want to audit the raw data yourself and like having crawlability and schema checks in the same tool. It's the cheaper way to keep evidence on a side project or a few small clients.
Pick AI Citation Monitor if you need Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, which AI Search Vitals doesn't list, or if you'd rather be handed a ranked fix list than a pile of answers. Growth is the tier where the fixes appear.
The Promptwatch option
Both tools stop where the work starts. Promptwatch picks up from there. Content Agents plan from a content gap analysis, write, and publish to Webflow, Framer or WordPress through a review inbox, so the fix ships instead of sitting on a list. Agent Analytics goes past a robots.txt checker: it reads real crawler logs from Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, Fastly, Vercel, Netlify, Akamai, Google Cloud CDN or custom HTTP, and maps a crawl to the citation that followed. Visitor analytics tracks AI-referred sessions to conversions. Citation analytics covers Reddit and YouTube sources as well as pages and domains.
Prompt trends also show what changed between checks, which answers the same "is this movement real?" question the confidence interval tries to answer.
Essential is $95/mo for 50 prompts and 6,000 responses. Professional is $245/mo with 150 prompts, 18,000 responses and 25M crawler logs. Agencies start at $199/mo with unlimited projects and prompts.
Verdict
AI Search Vitals is the better evidence locker. AI Citation Monitor is the better statistician with a to-do list. If you want a tool that also does the work and proves the crawl, start with Promptwatch Essential and add Professional when you want the logs.
FAQ
Does AI Search Vitals check the ChatGPT app itself?
No. It describes its runs as provider or API observations and says they may not reproduce the consumer apps.
Is AI Citation Monitor's confidence interval worth paying for?
If you report to people who overreact to small score changes, yes. It makes noise visible.
Can either tool publish content?
No. One audits and one prescribes. Promptwatch's Content Agents publish after your review; see promptwatch.com.
