How to check if ChatGPT recommends my business locally

How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business locally: a manual test, why results vary by place, and tools that track local AI visibility, ranked.

The quick way to check is to ask ChatGPT the questions a local customer would ask and see whether your business is named. The reliable way is to repeat that test from several locations, on several days, with a set of prompts, and record the results. A single query tells you almost nothing, because ChatGPT's answers vary between runs and its local answers depend on where the question appears to come from.

Step 1: write the prompts a customer would type

Local buyers phrase things in a few common ways. Build a list from each pattern.

  • Category plus place: "best plumber in [city]", "emergency dentist near [neighborhood]".
  • Specific need: "Italian restaurant in [city] with outdoor seating and vegan options".
  • Comparison: "[your business] vs [competitor] in [city]".
  • Brand: "is [your business] in [city] any good".
  • Intent with a constraint: "open now", "kid friendly", "under [price]".

Include the ways your own customers describe you, not only the way you describe yourself. Sales calls, reviews and support emails are the best source.

Step 2: run them manually, carefully

Open ChatGPT, ask each question and note whether your business appears, in what position, and with what description. Then repeat from a different device, a different day and, if possible, a different location. Treat this as a smoke test. If you see yourself in some runs and not others, you have learned something real: your visibility is partial.

Check the details the answer repeats about you, such as hours, address and services. Errors there usually point to inconsistent information across your website and listings.

Step 3: look at what sources ChatGPT uses

When ChatGPT searches the web for a local question, the answer is built from pages it finds. For local businesses these are often a mix of your website, listing sites, review platforms, local news and directories. Check whether your business information is consistent and complete on the pages that appear. Your Google Business Profile and your main listings remain the foundation for local presence generally.

Step 4: track it properly

Manual checks do not scale and do not show trends. A tracker runs your prompts daily and keeps the record.

Promptwatch

Promptwatch fits local checking in several ways. It tracks prompts daily through the real interfaces of ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, so you see what a customer sees. Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking starts on the Business plan ($579/mo) and is on every agency plan. In October 2026 it added local GEO and SEO targeting, which pins a monitor to exact coordinates, from a 20 meter to 5 kilometer radius, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. That targeting is on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise. Other models fall back to country, state or city.

Beyond location, the diagnosis tools help. Citation analytics shows which pages and domains ChatGPT cites for your local prompts, and offsite mentions where your business is named without a link. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, so you can confirm that bots like OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User can reach your site. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo).

Local Falcon

Local Falcon sends the same prompt from points on a grid around your location, from 9 to 441 points, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Grok, and maps where you are recommended. It reports Share of AI Voice and the competitors named instead of you. Plans run from $24.99/mo and are credit-based, so large grids use credits quickly. It is strong on geography and does not describe crawler logs or AI-referred conversions.

BrightLocal Local AI Visibility

BrightLocal Local AI Visibility tracks up to 20 prompts per location on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and scores each location against local competitors. It is included on Track, Manage and Grow plans from $41/mo for one location on monthly billing. It has a hard cap of 20 prompts per location, and it is a good fit if you already use BrightLocal.

2Local FalconFrom $24.99/moGeo-grid scans from 9 to 441 points

Promptwatch ranks first because local visibility needs a cause as well as a map. If ChatGPT does not name you, you need to see which sources it cites and whether its crawlers can read your site. Local Falcon and BrightLocal are good supplements when geography is the main question.

What to do if you are missing

  1. Make your name, address, phone, hours and services consistent across your site and listings.
  2. Write pages that answer local questions plainly: services, areas served, prices if you can share them.
  3. Earn mentions on local directories, review platforms and local press.
  4. Check that AI crawlers can reach your site.
  5. Re-test after two weeks.

A limit worth stating

No tool can guarantee ChatGPT will recommend your business. Tracking shows where you stand, in which places and why. You still have to fix the listings, pages and mentions that the answers draw on.
