Digital marketing manager: strategies to boost your brand's visibility on AI platforms like ChatGPT

Strategies a digital marketing manager can use to boost brand visibility on AI platforms like ChatGPT: a baseline, crawler access, content, sources and measurement.

You have a brand to grow, a budget that is not infinite, and a growing feeling that buyers are asking ChatGPT instead of Google. The good news is that visibility on AI platforms responds to ordinary marketing discipline: know your baseline, remove blockers, publish useful material, show up in the places engines read, and measure. The bad news is that there is no switch to flip, and nobody can promise a recommendation. Here is a strategy sequence that works for a marketing manager without a data science team.

Strategy 1: get a baseline before changing anything

Write down 30 to 50 questions your buyers ask, split into three types: category questions with no brand named ("best accounting software for a small agency"), comparison questions ("X vs Y", "alternatives to X"), and brand questions ("is X any good?"). Run them across the engines your buyers use and record whether you are named, in what position, and with what tone.

You can do the first pass by hand in an afternoon, but it will not scale and the answers vary day to day. A tracker removes the noise. Promptwatch runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language and reports Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Position in Answer and Sentiment. It starts free: Explore covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, enough to see a first picture.

Strategy 2: make sure AI crawlers can reach your site

If GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or ChatGPT-User get blocked, nothing else on this list matters. Ask your developer or CDN admin to check three things: robots.txt for the relevant bots, firewall and bot-protection rules, and whether key content appears in the page source rather than only after JavaScript runs. Blocking a training crawler and blocking a search crawler are separate decisions, so make them on purpose.

To verify rather than assume, you need crawler logs. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs with a crawl-to-citation path per page. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month. Cloudflare users can see a free first view in Cloudflare AI Crawl Control, though it covers only traffic passing through Cloudflare.

Strategy 3: write for the questions behind the question

Engines run several sub-searches before answering, called query fan-outs. A page about "project management software" may need to answer pricing, integrations, team size and alternatives. Look at the fan-outs for your priority prompts and make sure your pages answer those sub-questions directly, near the top, in plain sentences. Promptwatch shows fan-outs per model, and its Answer Gap report lists prompts where competitors are cited and you are not.

Be careful with claims. Do not invent statistics or testimonials to look authoritative. An engine can repeat what you publish, so publish only what you can support.

Strategy 4: show up where engines read

Your website is only part of what an engine uses. Reddit threads, YouTube videos, review sites and third-party comparison lists get cited constantly. Check what is cited for the prompts you want to win. Promptwatch's citation analytics show page, domain, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn sources, and offsite mentions where your brand is named without a link. The fix may be PR, a presence in community discussions, or inclusion on a list, not a new blog post.

Strategy 5: keep content fresh and consistent

Refresh the pages you want cited, keep facts consistent between your site and profiles, and fix pages that lose citations over time. Promptwatch's Content Refresh gives diff-style suggestions for existing pages, and its Brand Book lets you define what counts as a mention.

Strategy 6: measure traffic and conversions

Visibility without business impact is hard to defend to your boss. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. Crisp reported that AI-referred traffic converted at 2x the rate of traditional channels, and TreeHouse reported AI search reaching about 25% of organic conversions after fixing crawler access. Those are their results, not a forecast for your brand.

Which tool fits a marketing manager

ToolStarting price (as published)Best for
PromptwatchFree; paid from $95/moTracking plus crawler logs, citations, traffic and content in one place
AthenaHQFrom $295/moTeams that want a guided optimization workflow; personas are Enterprise
Scrunch AIFrom $250/moMonitoring with site audits and bot traffic reporting
HubSpot AEO$50/moHubSpot users who want a low-cost start on three engines
Ahrefs Brand RadarWith paid AhrefsAhrefs users starting with Custom Prompts

For a marketing manager who needs one tool and has to show results, Promptwatch fits best, mainly because the crawler and conversion layers are not published by the others.

A 30-day plan

  • Week 1: build the prompt set and baseline.
  • Week 2: audit crawler access and fix blockers.
  • Week 3: refresh your five most important pages against fan-outs and gaps.
  • Week 4: fix one off-site gap, then rerun the same prompts and compare.

What to tell your boss

Answers vary by model, country and phrasing, so any promise of a guaranteed placement is a red flag. What you can promise is a measured baseline, fewer technical blockers and a prioritized fix list that you recheck weekly.
