Small business owner: the best tool to track your brand's presence in AI search engines

A small business owner's guide to tracking brand presence in AI search: what each tool costs, what it actually measures, and which one to start with.

If you run a small business, you probably have no analyst, no spare budget for an enterprise contract, and a vague worry that customers now ask ChatGPT where to buy instead of opening Google. You want a tool that tells you whether your brand shows up in those answers, and what to do when it does not. This guide ranks the realistic options for that job, using the pricing each vendor publishes.

Quick verdict

Start with Promptwatch. It has a free Explore plan (1 project, 10 prompts, ChatGPT only) so you can see your own data before paying, and the first paid plan, Essential at $95 a month, adds all tracked models, 50 prompts, content gap analysis and a site audit. The reason it wins for a small business is not the dashboard. Most trackers only tell you whether you were mentioned. Promptwatch also shows which pages AI cites, what traffic AI sends you, and (from the Professional plan) which AI crawlers are reading your site, then helps you write the content that fills the gap. One owner with no team needs that loop in one place.

If your budget is tight and you only want a snapshot, a free one-off grader is a fair first step. If you already pay for Ahrefs or HubSpot, check what you get included before buying anything new.

What a small business actually needs

Before comparing logos, decide what question you are asking.

  • Am I mentioned at all? Prompt tracking: a set of questions your customers ask, run daily across AI engines, with a visibility score.
  • Who is mentioned instead of me? Competitor share of voice on the same prompts.
  • Why am I missing? Citation analytics and crawler logs show whether AI can read your site and which pages it quotes.
  • Does it bring customers? Referral and conversion tracking for AI visitors.
  • What do I do next? Gap analysis and content help.

Most small businesses need the first two answered cheaply and the last three answered eventually. That is why the first plan you pick should not trap you in monitoring only.

The shortlist

1. Promptwatch

Published pricing: Explore is free, Essential is $95 a month, Professional is $245, Business is $579, with a 7-day trial on monthly billing for Essential and Professional. Essential gives you 50 prompts, 6,000 responses, 200K visitor events, a site audit of 1,500 pages and content gap analysis. Crawler logs start on Professional, so if you want to see GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot visits you will need that tier or above.

Best for: owners who want tracking, diagnosis and content creation in one login. Limit: a single-project plan is enough for one business, but a business with several brands needs a higher tier.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ has a free Essential plan with 300 credits (one credit is one AI response) and a Starter plan at $295 a month with 3,600 credits and 11 models. It rolls results into a GEO score and turns gaps into actions. It is a capable platform, but the entry paid price is about three times Promptwatch Essential, and it does not publish crawler logs or AI-referred conversion tracking on the pricing page.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI starts at $250 a month on the Core plan: 125 prompts, 5,000 responses a month, 5 site audits, four LLMs. It also sells an Agent Experience Platform on Enterprise. Good for a mid-size marketing team, heavy for a one-person shop.

4. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar includes Custom Prompts at no extra cost on paid Ahrefs plans, with a daily quota of 5 prompts on Lite, 10 on Standard and 20 on Advanced. If you already use Ahrefs, that is a free way to start. The larger AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month.

5. HubSpot AEO and the AI Search Grader

HubSpot AEO is $50 a month ($45 yearly), or included in Marketing Hub Pro and Enterprise, tracking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. HubSpot also offers a free, one-time AI Search Grader: a snapshot with no history or custom prompts. Useful as a first look, not a monitoring system.

6. Profound

Profound has a free 7-day trial, but the real product is a custom Enterprise plan, estimated around $40k a year in our catalog entry. It sells itself as an AI marketer with agents for research, content and reporting. Not a small business purchase.

Also named in searches

Otterly.AI is cheap to start (Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts) and popular with freelancers, but 15 prompts goes quickly. Peec AI is from $95 a month and focuses on prompt-level monitoring. Both are monitoring tools, so you will still need something else for diagnosis and content.

Who should pick which

  • One owner, no team, wants customers from AI: Promptwatch Essential, or its free plan first.
  • Already paying for Ahrefs: switch on Custom Prompts and add Promptwatch when you need citations and traffic.
  • Already in HubSpot Marketing Hub: use the included AEO tracking, and accept that it will tell you where you stand but not why.
  • Want a one-off sanity check today: the free grader, then decide.
  • Agency or franchise: look at Promptwatch's agency plans (from $199 a month) instead of stacking small-business seats.

What no tool can do

No tracker can guarantee a recommendation. AI answers vary between runs, and a tool measures how often you appear, not whether you will. Treat the score as a trend line. Use at least a month of daily data before drawing conclusions, and pick 20 to 50 prompts that sound like real customers: "best plumber near me for emergency repairs", not your brand name alone.

A simple first week

Day one: write 20 customer questions, including three that name a competitor. Day two: load them into a free or trial plan. Day three: read which pages get cited and which competitors appear. By day seven you will know whether your problem is that AI cannot find you, or finds you and prefers someone else. That answer decides what you spend next, and it is why a platform that also covers citations and content beats a pure monitor for a business of one.
