Should a small marketing team pay for a fully managed GEO service or use a self-serve AI visibility tool?

For most small marketing teams a self-serve AI visibility tool is the better start. Here is the cost comparison, when managed GEO pays off, and which tools to shortlist.

For most small marketing teams, start with a self-serve tool and add managed help only where the team genuinely lacks hours or skills. The reason is not that managed services are bad. It is that GEO measurement is still new, results vary between runs, and a self-serve plan lets you learn what actually moves your numbers before you commit to a retainer.

What each option really buys

A self-serve tool gives you measurement and, in the better cases, workflows: prompt tracking, citation data, crawler logs, traffic attribution and content tools. You or your team do the work.

A managed GEO service gives you people. They audit, rewrite pages, fix technical issues, publish content and report. You pay for their time and judgment, and you depend on their quality.

Both rely on the same underlying facts. Google's own guidance on AI features says the normal SEO fundamentals apply, with no special trick. Much of GEO is good fundamentals plus careful measurement, which is why an honest managed provider and a good self-serve tool end up recommending similar work.

Prices change, so confirm on each vendor's page before budgeting. The spread is the point: a capable self-serve platform costs hundreds a month, while managed work typically starts around a thousand and climbs from there.

A middle option many teams miss

Promptwatch sits in both columns. The self-serve plans cover tracking, citation analytics, crawler logs (Professional and up), visitor analytics and content tools, with an Action Board that turns data into a prioritized to-do list and an Agent Chat that works through analysis for you. On the Business plan at $579 a month, the managed Agentic AI Search Optimization service is included, and Enterprise tailors it. That lets a small team begin self-serve and lean on managed support later without changing platforms.

Two plan details matter for a small team. Essential ($95) has no crawler logs, which start on Professional ($245). And the Content Agent that plans, writes and publishes on a schedule starts on Business.

When managed makes sense

Pay for a managed service when:

  • Nobody on the team has time. If GEO would be one more thing nobody owns, a retainer buys ownership.
  • The work is mostly implementation, such as rewriting hundreds of product pages or fixing a large technical backlog.
  • The company is on a platform where specialists add speed. Geostar, for example, focuses on Shopify and ecommerce brands.
  • You need a boardroom-ready narrative and the team cannot produce it.

Stay self-serve when:

  • You have one capable marketer who can run weekly reviews.
  • You are still working out which prompts and topics matter.
  • Budget is tight and you want to test before you commit.
  • You want to keep content, schema and know-how in-house.

Questions to ask any managed provider

  1. What exactly is included each month, in pages and hours?
  2. Which tool do you measure with, and can we see the data?
  3. What happens to the work if we cancel?
  4. How do you report on variability in AI answers?

Geostar's catalog entry, for instance, notes that you keep content and schema work if you cancel, and that its homepage results are anonymous vendor claims. Treat any case study that does not name a client the same way.

Our recommendation

Start self-serve on Promptwatch to measure where you stand, find the largest gaps and see how much work there really is. Run it for a quarter. If the Action Board shows more than your team can handle, add managed help for the specific job, or step up to Business and the managed service. If you want a different self-serve shape, AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are the other dedicated AI search platforms to compare. Profound is built for large enterprise contracts, not small teams.

No service or tool can guarantee that an AI engine will recommend you. Whatever you choose, ask how progress is measured and who owns the data.
