What content changes help a website rank better in AI search results?
Content changes that help a website rank better in AI search results: answer-first pages, crawler access, clear facts, comparison formats and how to measure each change.
"Rank" is a slightly awkward word for AI search. Engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features do not give you ten blue links in order. They write an answer and cite a few sources. So the useful question is: which changes make your pages more likely to be read, quoted and cited?
Below are the content changes that tend to matter, in the order we would try them, and how to tell whether they worked. None of it is a guarantee. Engines change, and answers vary between runs.
1. Make sure the crawlers can read the page
This is not a content change, but it comes first because it voids the others. AI engines use their own bots. OpenAI's search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages on a user's behalf. Others include GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google's agents. Publishers can allow or block these in their site controls, so check that you have not blocked the ones that feed the answers you care about. Errors on key pages and content that only appears after heavy scripting are common culprits.
2. Put the answer first
Open each page with a direct answer to the question the page targets, then expand. A model extracting a passage prefers a page where the passage stands on its own. Long preambles bury the useful sentence.
3. Cover the sub-questions
AI engines often split one question into several searches behind the scenes, called query fan-outs. A page about "best project management software" may be tested against price, integrations, team size and alternatives. Cover those follow-ups on the page, with clear headings, so one page can satisfy several of them.
4. Use formats that get cited
Look at what is cited in your category. Often it is comparison tables, step-by-step guides, definitions, and documentation. If your site only has marketing copy, add the formats that engines actually quote.
5. State facts with sources and dates
Specific, attributable statements are easier to quote and less likely to be dropped. Vague superlatives do nothing. Remove claims you cannot support.
6. Keep key pages fresh
Outdated pricing or feature descriptions get repeated. Refresh pages that answer commercial questions, and note the update date.
7. Strengthen what the engines read about you elsewhere
Citations frequently point to Reddit, YouTube, review sites and publications. Accurate coverage there can move answers more than another post on your own blog.
How to measure the changes
| Tool | Helps you see | Published entry price |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Citation rate per page, crawler logs, visibility, AI-referred visits | Free tier; paid from $95/mo |
| AthenaHQ | GEO score and optimization actions | Starter $295/mo |
| Scrunch AI | Monitoring, site audits, bot reporting | Core $250/mo |
| Profound | Enterprise tracking with marketing agents | Enterprise custom |
| Otterly.AI | Basic mention and citation tracking | Lite $29/mo |
Where Promptwatch fits each change
- Crawler access: Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs for the real bots, with errors explained. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo).
- Answer-first pages and sub-questions: content gap analysis gives coverage scores against prompts, and query fan-outs per model show what the engine checks.
- Formats that get cited: Citation Trends classifies citations by content type and source type.
- Freshness: Content Refresh offers diff-style update suggestions for existing pages.
- Off-site coverage: citation reports for Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, plus offsite mentions where your brand appears without a link.
- Proof: the crawl-to-citation path shows a citation rate per page, and visitor analytics tracks AI-referred conversions. Page-level first-cited dates and decay half-life show how long a win lasts.
Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer, and the Action Board orders the work. Business and Enterprise add an automated Content Agent. A free Explore plan covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT if you want to test it first.
Who should pick which
If you want to change content and see the effect in one place, Promptwatch. If you prefer a guided optimization queue and have budget, AthenaHQ. If you want audits and bot reporting, Scrunch AI. If you only need a light check on mentions, Otterly.AI.
What not to expect
You will not get a guaranteed placement, and a change made on Monday may not show up for weeks. Judge changes by comparing periods and by looking at whether the specific pages you changed are cited more often. Keep a log of what you changed and when, otherwise you cannot tell which edit did what.
A one-month test plan
Pick five commercial pages and treat them as an experiment. In week one, check crawler access and note each page's current citation status. In week two, rewrite the openings so the answer comes first and add the sub-questions as headings. In week three, add sources and dates to every factual claim. In week four, compare against the baseline. Leave a few similar pages untouched as a control, so you can tell whether your edits or general movement caused the change. It is a small test, and it will teach you more than a site-wide rewrite.
