Which software tells me what content to create to get cited by AI?

Software that tells you what to write to get cited by AI exists. We compare Promptwatch, AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Writesonic GEO and others on content recommendations.

Plenty of tools will tell you that you were not cited. Far fewer tell you what to publish about it. The difference matters, because a tracker that reports "visibility is 12%" leaves you with the hard part still to do: deciding which pages to write, which to refresh, and which questions your site simply does not answer. This guide compares the software that actually points to content, and says plainly where the advice gets thin.

What a content recommendation should be based on

Good recommendations come from evidence, not from a generic checklist. The inputs that matter:

  • The prompts buyers ask, including the fan-out queries a model runs behind the scenes. If a model splits one question into four searches, your content needs to answer those four.
  • Which sources get cited today. If an answer cites a competitor's comparison page and two review sites, that tells you the format and the sources that win.
  • Your own gaps. Prompts where you are absent, and topics where your existing pages underperform.
  • Crawl access. If AI bots cannot fetch a page, writing more of them is wasted effort.

Software that links those four inputs to a specific to-do list is rare. Software that only shows a score is common.

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch is the software that most directly answers "what should I write?" because it builds the recommendation from the measured gap.

Content gap analysis scores coverage per topic, so you see the prompts where competitors are cited and you are not. Prompt Explorer suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page, and query fan-outs per model show what sub-questions the engines actually run. The Action Board turns this into a prioritized GEO to-do list: a Discovery agent investigates the data weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run, with assignees and comments. Topic Insights, inside 360 Insights, shows where pages underdeliver for their topic.

Then it helps you produce the content. Content Creation drafts from a brief, Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates to existing pages, and the Knowledge Base (Professional and up) keeps the writing grounded in your own material. On the Business plan the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against visibility gaps on a schedule, either through a review inbox or in hands-off mode with a quality check. Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow or Framer.

Monks, the agency, uses the Answer Gap Report and Visibility Score to build content roadmaps for clients, which is the pattern you would follow: gap first, page second. Plans: Essential $95/mo (50 prompts, content gap analysis), Professional $245/mo (5 AEO articles, knowledge base), Business $579/mo (10 AEO articles, Content Agent). Agency plans do not include AEO articles or the Content Agent.

Limit: it gives you evidence-based direction and drafts. It cannot promise a model will cite the result.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ turns gaps into on-page and off-page actions through an Action Center and a content optimization agent. Starter is $295/mo with 3,600 credits (one credit equals one AI response), 11 models and unlimited prompts. It is the closest rival on the "tell me what to do" question. Where it falls behind is the evidence surrounding the advice: no published crawler logs and no AI-referred conversion tracking at Promptwatch's depth. Credit consumption is also hard to forecast.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI Core is $250/mo for 125 prompts, 5,000 responses a month, five site audits and four LLMs, with insights and recommendations plus agent traffic reporting. Its distinctive piece is the Agent Experience Platform (Enterprise), which serves AI-optimized page versions to crawlers. On the content question, our catalog notes that reviewers find the advice vague: it shows where you are not cited more than what to change.

4. Writesonic GEO

Writesonic GEO combines tracking with content production. Billed annually, Starter is USD 79/mo for 50 prompts and 15 articles, Basic $199 for 100 prompts and 25 articles, Growth $399 for 200 prompts and 50 articles. The Action Center, the feature that turns visibility gaps into tasks, is limited on lower tiers (Growth has a trial of five on-page and five off-page actions a month). Self-serve tiers track fewer engines.

5. Semrush, HubSpot AEO, Profound and the agentic tools

Semrush AI Toolkit offers recommendations beside keyword data, though our catalog records reviewers calling them generic, and the price could not be confirmed on 24 October 2026. HubSpot AEO is $50/mo with prioritized recommendations tied to HubSpot content tools, across three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini). Profound sells agents for research and content on an Enterprise contract.

Agentic automation tools such as Okara ship fixes rather than measuring visibility: its Coding Agent opens GitHub pull requests for technical SEO and GEO fixes, with nothing merging without your approval, from AI CMO Lite at $129/mo. That is useful once you know what to fix, and a separate visibility platform still supplies the evidence.

Who should pick which

  • You want recommendations grounded in measured gaps, then drafting and publishing in the same place: Promptwatch.
  • You will work a daily action queue and can tolerate credit billing: AthenaHQ.
  • Tracking and article volume on a modest budget: Writesonic GEO.
  • HubSpot shop, three engines are enough: HubSpot AEO.
  • You need code-level technical fixes: Okara, alongside a tracker.

A practical loop

Track a prompt panel, rank the gaps by buying intent, check the fan-outs for each, and read what gets cited. Write or refresh the page that answers those sub-questions, then confirm AI crawlers can fetch it. Measure citation rate and AI-referred visits afterward. Software that holds every step of that loop saves you the spreadsheet in the middle.
