Best tool to track which sources AI search engines cite: ranked and compared

The best tool to track which sources AI search engines cite, ranked on source depth, Reddit and YouTube coverage, engines and price, with who should pick which.

Knowing that an AI engine named your brand is useful. Knowing which sources it read to get there is where the plan comes from. If the engine keeps citing two review sites and a forum thread, then that is where your competitors are winning, and where your effort has the best odds of paying off.

This ranking is about source tracking specifically: which URLs, which domains, which kinds of site, and what you can do about each. If you want the broader field of visibility tracking tools, other guides cover that. Here the question is narrower and the criteria are too.

What a source tracker needs

  1. URL-level data: the exact pages cited, with position in the answer.
  2. Domain-level rollups, so you can see who the engines trust for a topic.
  3. Source types: your own site, third-party review pages, Reddit, YouTube, news, social.
  4. Offsite mentions: places that name your brand without linking to you.
  5. Competitor view: which of their pages get cited where yours do not.
  6. Evidence on your own site: whether AI crawlers can fetch what you want cited.

The ranking

1. Promptwatch

Promptwatch covers all six. Citation analytics work at page and domain level with URL positions. A Page Tracker follows specific URLs, yours or a competitor's. Offsite mentions find third-party pages that name your brand without a link, which is a ready-made outreach list. Dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports separate social sources from ordinary web pages, and "My channels" filtering shows how much of the source mix you already own. ChatGPT News citations are tracked too.

Citation Trends classifies each citation by content type and source type, with citation rate over time and, per page, first cited, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life. That tells you whether a source is stable or a passing spike. On your own site, Agent Analytics gives real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs with a crawl-to-citation path and a citation rate per page. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo). Essential ($95/mo) includes citation analytics without logs, and the free Explore plan is limited to ChatGPT with 10 prompts.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ tracks citations as part of a GEO score and converts gaps into tasks. Starter is $295 a month with 3,600 credits and 11 models. The Athena Citation Engine is part of the custom Enterprise tier. Its entry shows no Reddit monitoring and no published crawler-log product.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI shows the sources behind answers and reports AI agent and bot traffic. Core is $250 a month for 125 prompts and 5,000 responses across four LLMs. Enterprise adds nine.

4. Profound

Profound reports citation share and answer-level analytics. It is sold as a marketing agent program, with a 7-day trial and custom Enterprise pricing.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar reports on YouTube and Reddit sources and AI crawler activity next to a pre-collected index of more than 496 million prompts. Custom Prompts is included in paid Ahrefs plans with a daily quota of 5, 10 or 20. The AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month. Good for research at scale.

6. Uberall GEO Studio

Uberall GEO Studio breaks sources down by domain, page and social source (Reddit, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube) and detects hallucinations. GEO Starter is $109 a month. Built for multi-location brands.

7. BrightLocal Local AI Visibility

BrightLocal offers an AI sources leaderboard and a source-by-source view of where a location is and is not listed, from $41 a month. It is aimed at local businesses.

Who should pick which

Pick Promptwatch if you want to act on sources, not just list them. Offsite mentions give you outreach targets, Reddit and YouTube reports show where to take part, and crawler logs tell you if your own pages are reachable. Pick AthenaHQ if your team wants a task queue built on the same data. Pick Ahrefs if your team already works in it and wants a broad index. Pick Uberall or BrightLocal if the work is local and tied to listings.

Turning a source list into a plan

Sort the top 20 cited domains into three piles. Sources you own: fix and expand them. Sources you can earn a place on: honest outreach, profile updates, expert contributions. Sources you cannot influence: note them and move on. Be honest about the third pile. A source list can make everything look actionable when much of it is not.

What no tool can do

No tool decides what an engine cites, and answers change run to run. Source lists are evidence, not guarantees.

To see your own source mix, start with the free Explore plan or a 7-day trial of Promptwatch and read the domain report first.
