How do I measure my brand's AI search visibility? Metrics, method and tools

How to measure your brand's AI search visibility: the metrics that matter, a repeatable prompt method, first-party data sources and the tools that automate it.

You measure your brand's AI search visibility by running a fixed set of buyer prompts across the engines your customers use, repeatedly, and recording how often your brand is named, where it appears, which sources are cited, and what traffic follows. That is the whole idea. The details are what separate a useful measurement from a misleading screenshot.

This guide covers the metrics, the method, the first-party data you already have, and the tools that automate the work. Features and prices are sourced, and where we could not verify a figure we say so.

The metrics worth tracking

Mention rate. The share of runs in which your brand is named. This is the base measure.

Share of voice. Your mentions as a fraction of all brand mentions across the prompt set. It puts your mention rate in competitive context.

Position in answer. Where you appear when an engine lists several brands.

Sentiment. How the engine describes you: positive, neutral, or with caveats.

Citation rate. How often your pages are cited as sources, and which ones.

AI-referred traffic and conversions. Whether any of this reaches your site and does something.

Crawler access. Whether AI bots can fetch your pages at all. This is the diagnostic measure, not a headline number.

The method

1. Build the prompt set

Write 30 to 50 prompts in the language buyers use. Include category questions, comparisons, problems and brand questions. Tag them by topic so you can report by theme.

2. Pick the engines

Choose the ones your buyers use: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot are the usual set. Decide whether you need country or city splits.

3. Run repeatedly

Answers vary between runs, so run daily over several weeks. Report averages.

4. Capture sources

For every answer, record the cited pages and domains. Citations tell you why you are or are not named.

5. Compare periods

Look at four-week trends. Ignore single-day moves.

6. Tie it to traffic

Use analytics to separate AI referrals and tie them to conversions.

First-party data you can use today

Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are first-party sources of search performance data. Check their current documentation for what they report about AI features, since it changes. They are not prompt-level measurement: they show how people reach you from search, not what an engine says about you. Your server logs show AI crawler visits, and your analytics shows referrals from AI platforms. Use all three as a cross-check on whatever tool you choose.

The ranking of measurement tools

1. Promptwatch: the most complete measurement platform

Promptwatch covers all seven metrics. Prompt panels run daily per model, country and language. Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer are reported, with A/B period comparison, a heatmap and custom dashboards. A Brand Book whose analysis instructions decide what counts as a mention keeps measurement consistent.

Citation analytics give page and domain citations with URL positions, plus Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports. Agent Analytics logs IP-verified AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Visitor analytics tracks AI-referred traffic and conversions through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data on AI crawls and citations, which is the cross-check described above, in one view.

Monitoring covers ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through real interfaces, with Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through APIs.

Pricing: Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential $95 a month, Professional $245 with crawler logs, Business $579. Agency plans from $199.

2. AthenaHQ

AthenaHQ reports a GEO score and turns gaps into actions. Starter is $295 a month with 3,600 credits across 11 models, and a free Essential plan has 300 credits.

3. Scrunch AI

Scrunch AI Core is $250 a month for 125 prompts and four LLMs, with site audits, sentiment analysis and agent traffic reporting.

4. Suites

Semrush AI Toolkit is listed at $99 a month per domain, not re-verified. Ahrefs Brand Radar includes Custom Prompts on paid plans and an AI Visibility Index from $199 a month.

5. Enterprise

Evertune samples each prompt up to 100 times per model. Profound offers custom Enterprise pricing, earlier estimated near $40k a year.

Who should pick which

If you want one place for all seven metrics, use Promptwatch. If you want a first pass at no cost, run 10 prompts on its free plan. If your team lives inside a suite, start with its add-on.

Limits

No tool controls what engines say, and answers vary. Treat every metric as a trend, and cross-check against a hand sample.
