AI Search Visibility Monitoring for Agencies: ChatGPT Citations and Brand Monitoring Tools
Agencies retain AI search clients by reporting citations they earned, not mention charts. How to make the cited URL the monthly deliverable, and which tools support it across many clients.
Most agency AI visibility reports open with a mention chart: the client's brand appeared in some percentage of ChatGPT answers this month, up or down a bit. Clients nod at that for a quarter or two. Then someone asks what the agency actually did, and the chart has no answer, because a mention rate moves for reasons nobody in the room controls.
Citations are a better deliverable. A citation is a specific URL that ChatGPT or another engine linked as a source for a specific prompt. You can point at it. You can show the page the agency shipped, the date the engine's crawler fetched it, and the run where it first appeared as a source. That chain is the agency's work made visible, and it's the version of the monitor, diagnose, act, verify loop a client will pay for every month.
What a citation report contains
Per client, per month, we would put five things in front of the client.
- Prompts where the client's URLs were cited, by engine, with the count compared to last month.
- Citations gained and lost, each with the URL and the prompt.
- For lost citations, the competitor or third-party URL that replaced it. This is the diagnosis.
- Pages the agency shipped or changed, with crawl dates and whether each one has been cited yet. This is the action and its verification.
- Offsite sources (Reddit threads, YouTube videos, review sites) that engines cite on the client's prompts, as outreach targets.
Brand mentions still belong in the report as context. They just stop being the headline.
Setting up many clients without drowning
Give every client its own project with its own prompt set, competitor list, and location settings. Tag prompts by topic and funnel stage from day one so the monthly report can group them without manual work. Keep a change log per client: every page shipped and every prompt added. Without it, three months later nobody can say whether a citation came from your work or from luck.
Response volume is the hidden constraint. Each prompt run on each engine consumes capacity, so 15 clients with 100 prompts on five engines adds up fast. Plan the budget against responses, not just prompt counts.
The tools, judged on citations across clients
Promptwatch
Promptwatch has self-serve agency plans built for this. All three include unlimited projects and prompts and 10 seats. Kick-off is $199/mo with 10,000 responses and 10M crawler logs, Growth is $399/mo with 25,000 responses and 25M crawler logs, and Scale is $799/mo with 65,000 responses and 100M crawler logs. Enterprise adds SSO and white-label.
Citation analytics are the reason it leads this list. They break sources down by page, domain, Reddit, YouTube, offsite mentions, and citation type, and citation trends show how sources move over time rather than as a single count. Agent Analytics crawler logs cover the verify step for every client, showing when ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot fetched a shipped page and the crawl-to-citation path that followed. That's items three and four of the report, generated rather than assembled by hand.
For delivery, Looker Studio handles client-facing dashboards, and the REST API and MCP server let you pull citation data into your own reporting or have an agent draft the monthly summary. There's a Slack integration for the account team too. We cover those connections in detail in Promptwatch MCP, REST API, Slack, and Looker Studio.
AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ Starter ($295/mo, $245 annual) includes unlimited seats and an API, and its Action Center turns findings into assignable tasks, which suits an agency team. Starter is limited to a single country, and our listing notes that citation analytics at the page, Reddit, and YouTube level aren't documented. Credit-based billing makes per-client cost harder to predict.
Scrunch AI
Scrunch AI offers competitor benchmarking and its Agent Experience Platform. For agencies, the warning in our listing is reporting: weak reporting is the top complaint, with users exporting to Excel to build client charts. Starter is $250/mo annual with 3 seats.
Profound
Profound gets nearest to the deliverable above on the reporting side, because it breaks citation share and competitor cite-rates out per prompt cluster. The constraint is packaging: Growth ($399/mo annual) is 3 engines, 100 prompts, and 3 seats, and the API sits on Enterprise, which starts around $40k a year.
Encited
Encited is an agentic option with an agency tier at $314/mo annual ($349 monthly): 50 edge proxy sites, 100 prompts, crawl log analysis, brandable PDF reports, scheduled reports, and 15 members. One hundred prompts spread across many clients is thin for citation reporting, but the crawl logs and white-label PDFs are useful.
Otterly.AI and Peec AI
Otterly.AI Standard ($189/mo) includes 100 prompts, an API, and Looker Studio export, but no PDF export, and our listing notes data can be up to seven days stale. Peec AI sells agencies a multi-client setup with white-label reports, starting at $245/mo. Both are monitoring only, so the "what we shipped and whether it got cited" half of the report has to come from somewhere else.
Why the citation report keeps clients
A mention chart asks the client to trust you. A citation report shows them. When a client can see the page you published, the day the crawler fetched it, and the prompt where it became a source, the renewal conversation is about what to ship next rather than whether the retainer is worth it.
For the dashboard side of a large roster, our 15-client dashboard walkthrough covers the structure. For the tool, we would start with Promptwatch on Kick-off, which has a 7-day trial: unlimited client projects, citation analytics deep enough to build the report above, and crawler logs to prove each shipped page reached the engine. Details are on promptwatch.com, and the rest of the field is in our directory.
